Chapter 5 - MARLA TALKS

Marla eventually accepted a plea agreement.

Before sentencing, she gave a complete statement.

Not to us.

Through prosecutors.

I read the summary.

She had known Veronica for almost four years.

Previously worked as a private caregiver for one of Veronica’s friends.

After that job ended, she struggled financially.

Veronica contacted her during my pregnancy.

First request:

Help Nora after birth.

Second:

Report concerns.

Third:

Record concerns.

Fourth:

Create circumstances that made concerns visible.

Each step moved slightly beyond the previous one.

Marla said she knew it was wrong by step three.

Continued anyway.

Money mattered.

So did resentment.

She believed wealthy families treated people like her as disposable.

Veronica’s cash made her feel powerful.

Then she began treating me the way she believed the Whitmores treated everyone else.

As material.

That did not excuse anything.

Understanding is not forgiveness.

The basin incident was her own escalation.

Prosecutors believed that based on available evidence.

Veronica had demanded something “undeniable.”

Marla decided a dramatic rescue video would produce it.

Her plan was apparently to create a dangerous-looking scene, then appear to intervene.

When I entered earlier than expected, she panicked.

What happened next nearly killed Lily.

The distinction between intending terror and intending death mattered legally.

To me?

Less.

My daughter stopped breathing.

Intent did not restore those seconds.

At sentencing, Marla apologized.

I did not attend.

Ethan did.

He came home and said:

“She looked at me.”

“And?”

“I thought I’d hate her.”

“Did you?”

“Yes.”

Honest.

Then:

“But it didn't feel good.”

That was recovery too.

Hatred is heavy.

You eventually discover the other person does not carry it for you.
