Chapter 5 - LOCKER 314

The storage facility smelled of salt, dust, and old machinery.
Enzo had arranged for an attorney named Rachel Hayes to accompany us, along with a licensed investigator.
He insisted that anything we found be documented properly.
I appreciated that.
I also appreciated that he let me hold the key.
Locker 314 stood at the end of a narrow corridor.
Its metal door was covered in scratches.
I inserted the key.
Turned it.
The lock clicked.
Inside were three boxes.
A leather briefcase.
And a faded red scarf.
I recognized the scarf immediately.
My mother had worn it in photographs from before I was born.
I picked it up.
A familiar scent lingered beneath the dust.
Old perfume.
Something floral.
Something that reminded me of childhood.
My eyes burned.
Rachel opened the first box.
Inside were shipping manifests, handwritten notes, and bank records.
The second contained photographs.
The third held cassette tapes and a small digital recorder.
Enzo examined the briefcase.
His expression darkened.
"What is it?" I asked.
He showed me a folder.
Across the front were two names.
Daniel Bennett. Lorenzo Moretti.
My father.
And Enzo's father.
Rachel opened the folder.
The documents revealed a joint investigation into financial crimes within Moretti Maritime.
Daniel had discovered falsified shipping records.
Lorenzo had begun gathering evidence against his own brother, Salvatore.
But the most shocking discovery came from the recorder.
Rachel checked its battery and connected it to a portable speaker.
A man's voice filled the room.
My father's voice.
I knew it instantly.
Not because I remembered every detail.
But because some sounds live inside you long after the person who made them is gone.
"Evelyn, if you're hearing this, I'm sorry."
My knees weakened.
Enzo pulled a chair toward me.
I sat.
The recording continued.
"I found proof that Salvatore Moretti has been using company accounts to finance Victor Sloane's operations. Lorenzo knows. We're preparing to bring everything to the authorities."
A pause.
Then my father's voice became quieter.
"If something happens to me, please don't believe the first story they tell you."
I covered my mouth.
"And Clara, sweetheart, if you're old enough to hear this, I want you to know something."
My tears began falling.
"You were never the reason I was afraid. You were the reason I tried to be brave."
I broke.
There was no graceful way to describe it.
I bent forward and cried like the eleven-year-old girl who had waited beside the front door for a father who never came home.
Enzo knelt beside my chair.
He didn't touch me.
He waited.
When I finally looked at him, he asked quietly, "Can I hold your hand?"
I nodded.
His fingers closed around mine.
Warm.
Steady.
Real.
The recording continued.
Daniel described a plan to meet federal investigators on November fourteenth.
He also mentioned a second set of evidence.
Hidden somewhere called the Lantern Room.
Rachel wrote down the name.
Then the recording ended.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Finally, I asked the question that had been growing inside me.
"If my father was preparing to testify, why did he disappear?"
Enzo looked at Rachel.
She hesitated.
"There's something else."
She held up a sealed envelope from the briefcase.
It was addressed to Lorenzo Moretti.
Inside was a photograph taken at a private meeting.
Salvatore stood beside Victor Sloane.
And between them was a woman.
My mother.
I stared at the photograph.
"That's impossible."
Enzo looked equally stunned.
The date printed on the back was November 12, 2015.
Two days before my father disappeared.
My mother had told me she knew nothing about the investigation.
May you like
But there she was.
Standing beside the men who had destroyed our lives.
