Chapter 8 - THE DANCE WAS NEVER THE MIRACLE

The newspapers discovered Clara.
The headlines were terrible.
MAFIA KING'S MYSTERY PIANIST.
WOMAN WHO “REACHED” MORETTI HEIR.
One article called her:
THE WOMAN WHO BROKE THROUGH AN AUTISTIC BOY'S SILENCE.
Clara was furious.
Leo had never been silent.
People simply hadn't listened properly.
She refused interviews.
Then one reporter photographed Leo leaving therapy.
Dante's old instincts returned.
“I'll destroy them.”
“No.”
“They photographed my son.”
“Use lawyers.”
“They won't be as memorable.”
“Dante.”
He exhaled.
“Lawyers.”
“Good.”
Clara agreed to one public interview on one condition:
No photographs of Leo.
No medical details.
No inspirational nonsense.
When asked how she'd “reached” him, she answered:
“I didn't reach into some hidden place and pull out a different child. Leo was already there.”
The interviewer paused.
Clara continued:
“He communicated before I met him. He had preferences before I met him. He had humor, intelligence, frustration and ideas before I met him.”
“So what changed?”
“The adults.”
That quote spread everywhere.
The Moretti Foundation was rebuilt.
Carlo resigned voluntarily.
Not because he had stolen for himself, but because secrecy had still harmed the programs Sofia created.
Independent auditors took control.
A new program funded sensory-friendly arts spaces, communication supports and family services designed with autistic consultants.
Not for publicity.
Because Sofia had wanted it.
Leo helped choose the music room.
He hated the original lights.
They changed them.
He hated the chairs.
They changed those too.
One architect complained.
Dante fired him.
Clara rehired him after he apologized and actually listened.
Dante was annoyed.
“You reversed my firing.”
“You overreacted.”
“He called the chairs perfectly acceptable.”
“To him.”
“Exactly.”
Clara laughed.
Then Dante kissed her.
It was their first kiss.
Unexpected.
Brief.
He pulled away immediately.
“Sorry.”
Clara stared.
“Why are you apologizing?”
“I didn't ask.”
She smiled.
“Then ask.”
“May I kiss you?”
“No.”
His face fell.
She waited.
Then:
“Now you know how it feels when someone has a choice.”
Dante stared.
Clara smiled.
“Yes.”
He kissed her again.
May you like
This time she met him halfway.
