Chapter 6 - THE OFFER

Whitmore made one final offer.
Two million dollars.
Enough to change Emily’s life.
Enough to pay every debt.
Enough to start another bakery anywhere.
William did not advise her.
That surprised her.
“What should I do?”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re supposed to be the wise billionaire.”
“I’m an old man who once slept beside an oven.”
Emily smiled.
He continued.
“Money gives you choices. It does not make the choice.”
Emily spent the night alone inside the bakery.
She touched Rose’s counter.
Her father’s mixing bowl.
The marks on the wall where her mother measured Emily’s height.
At dawn, she knew.
She rejected the offer.
Not because old buildings mattered more than people.
Because she had a plan.
If she won ownership, Carter’s Bakery would become a community trust.
No developer could buy it.
No future Carter could sell it for personal profit.
The bakery would belong, legally, to the neighborhood it had served.
When William heard, he smiled.
“Rose would have hated that.”
Emily blinked.
“What?”
“She was extremely possessive about her kitchen.”
Emily burst out laughing.
Then William added softly:
May you like
“But she would have been proud.”
