Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED HIS MONEY

Elias offered to pay Delphine's debts.

She refused.

He offered her a better job.

She refused that too.

Finally, he asked:

“What do you want?”

Delphine looked at him.

“Justice.”

He nodded.

“Anything else?”

She hesitated.

Then said:

“I want Josie to have choices.”

Elias looked toward the little girl playing at the table.

Delphine continued.

“I don't want her future to depend on whether I can afford batteries or whether a clinic approves a funded placement.”

Elias nodded.

He didn't offer another check.

Instead, he asked:

“Would you help build something?”

Delphine frowned.

“What?”

“A legal aid and financial counseling program for families who have been trapped by predatory loans.”

She stared.

Elias continued.

“I can fund it independently. Lawyers can run it. Community organizations can oversee it.”

Delphine thought about Aaron.

The papers.

The fear.

The years of silence.

She swallowed.

“Yes.”

Elias smiled faintly.

“Good.”

Then she added:

“But I want it clear that I'm not doing this because I owe you anything.”

He nodded.

“I understand.”

She looked at him.

“And I want a salary.”

Elias laughed.

“Of course.”

Delphine smiled for the first time in weeks.

That evening, she returned home and told Odette.

Odette listened.

Then laughed.

“Girl, you went from scrubbing his floors to telling him how to spend his money.”

Delphine laughed too.

But later, when Josie was asleep, she opened Aaron's tin box.

She placed the new program proposal beside his old loan agreement.

Then whispered:

“We're going to help them, Aaron.”
