Chapter 6 - BIANCA HAD BEEN LYING FOR TWO YEARS

The break came from Elena’s phone.

Police had returned it to Vincent after the crash investigation.

It sat powered off in a safe.

No one thought it mattered.

Rachel did.

With proper legal process and forensic assistance, investigators recovered deleted messages.

Some were between Elena and Bianca.

At first:

ordinary.

Birthday plans.

Noah.

Clothes.

Then increasingly tense.

Elena:

You know what Salvatore is doing.

Bianca:

I know rumors.

Elena:

You saw the books.

Bianca:

Stop involving me.

Then:

If Vincent learns you helped Sal move money, he will never forgive you.

Bianca replied:

You don’t understand how this family survives.

There.

She knew.

More messages followed.

Bianca had helped Salvatore create invoices through a charitable foundation she managed.

She claimed she believed the money was meant to conceal Vincent’s legitimate security expenses.

Later she realized otherwise.

Instead of telling Vincent—

she kept quiet.

Fear.

Family loyalty.

Self-protection.

Then one message from Elena:

I’m taking Noah away for a while. I need Vincent to choose whether he wants a family or an empire built on people he refuses to see.

Bianca answered:

If you leave, Sal will think you’re cooperating with authorities. Please wait.

Elena:

I waited too long already.

Three days later, she died.

Again—

suspicious timing did not prove murder.

Investigators reopened aspects of the collision.

A fresh review found evidence of a mechanical problem that may have contributed.

Could it have been deliberate?

Possible.

Could ordinary failure explain it?

Also possible.

The evidence was insufficient to charge anyone with causing Elena’s death.

That frustrated Vincent.

Rachel told him:

“Uncertainty is not permission to invent certainty.”

He hated it.

Accepted it.

Then investigators focused on what could be proven.

Financial crimes.

Extortion.

Fraud.

Obstruction.

Salvatore’s network.

Bianca’s assistance.

Witness intimidation.

Real evidence.

Salvatore disappeared for forty-eight hours.

Then surrendered through an attorney.

No shootout.

No warehouse.

No bodies.

Vincent watched television footage silently.

Noah entered.

Saw his great-uncle on screen.

Immediately froze.

Vincent turned it off.

“Sorry.”

Noah whispered:

“He yelled at Mom.”

Vincent sat.

“What did he say?”

Rachel had warned them not to interrogate.

So Vincent answered:

“You don’t have to tell me.”

Noah looked at him.

Progress.

Then:

“He said she would ruin everything.”

Vincent’s eyes filled.

Noah continued:

“Mom said…”

He struggled.

“…better than Noah growing up like this.”

Vincent closed his eyes.

Elena had been trying to save their son from the entire system.

Including Vincent.

That was the truth he had avoided.

Not that she feared he would hurt Noah.

May you like

That she feared Noah would become him.
