Chapter 13 - THE LAST DEBT

Victor Ashbourne agreed to cooperate fully with investigators.
He provided records.
Named associates.
And admitted his role in the shipping scheme.
The forged documents bearing Kalantha's name were challenged.
The evidence supported her position that she had never authorized the guarantees.
The disputed obligations were removed from her name through the legal process.
Kalantha sat in her attorney's office when she heard the news.
For a moment, she couldn't speak.
Then she began crying.
Two years.
Two years of believing she owed something she had never borrowed.
Two years of living under someone else's decisions.
And now it was over.
She called Declan.
He answered immediately.
“Kalantha.”
She smiled through tears.
“It's done.”
He went quiet.
Then:
“The documents?”
“Yes.”
He exhaled.
“Good.”
That evening, Declan invited her to the estate.
Kalantha hesitated.
Then agreed.
When she arrived, he met her in the library.
On the table lay a small box.
She frowned.
“What's that?”
Declan smiled faintly.
“Something I should have given you a long time ago.”
She opened it.
Inside was a key.
Her old room at the estate.
And a handwritten note.
You never owed me your freedom.
Kalantha stared.
Then looked up.
Declan continued.
“I wanted you to have this.”
She frowned.
“Why?”
“Because I want you to know you can come here whenever you choose.”
He paused.
“And leave whenever you choose.”
Kalantha's eyes filled.
She looked at the key.
Then at him.
“Declan.”
“Yes?”
“I don't want a room here.”
He went still.
She smiled.
“I want a life.”
Declan nodded slowly.
“I know.”
She stepped closer.
“And I want you in it.”
Declan froze.
Kalantha smiled through her tears.
“But only if we build it together.”
His eyes filled.
“I'd like that.”
For the first time, there was no debt between them.
No obligation.
May you like
No arrangement.
Just a choice.
