Chapter 9 - THE THIRD GIRL

Winter came hard that year.

Snow buried the mountain roads.

One February night, a knock came at the estate door.

A young woman stood outside holding a baby.

She was seventeen.

Hungry.

Unmarried.

Terrified.

The housekeeper started to send her toward town.

Evelyn stopped her.

“Come inside.”

The girl cried while eating soup.

Her name was Anna.

Her family had thrown her out.

Evelyn looked at her worn shoes.

Her thin coat.

The way she apologized for every bite.

She saw herself.

Josiah found Evelyn later beside the fire.

“You want to help her.”

“Yes.”

“Then help her.”

“I was going to.”

“I know.”

Anna eventually found work at Evelyn's hotel.

Then another woman came.

Then another.

Within a year, Evelyn opened Gallagher House.

A residence where women could stay temporarily while working and saving money.

She named it after her parents.

Josiah funded part of it.

Evelyn funded the rest.

People who once mocked her body now praised her generosity.

She trusted neither opinion.

She had learned something.

The world could be cruel when it thought you were worthless and flattering when it thought you were powerful.

Neither determined your value.

That spring, Evelyn became ill.

Josiah panicked.

The doctor smiled.

“Mr. Whitmore, your wife isn't dying.”

Josiah glared.

“Then why is she vomiting?”

“Because she's pregnant.”

Silence.

Evelyn stared.

Josiah stared.

Then Rose asked:

“Does that mean there's a baby in her stomach?”

“Yes.”

Clara frowned.

“How did it get there?”

Josiah coughed so violently Evelyn thought he might actually die.

“We'll discuss that when you're thirty,” he said.

Evelyn laughed until she cried.

That evening, fear arrived.

“What if they think I'm replacing Margaret?” Evelyn whispered.

Josiah understood immediately.

The girls.

He brought Clara and Rose upstairs.

Evelyn told them.

Clara climbed beside her.

“You're not replacing Mama.”

Evelyn cried.

“How do you know?”

Clara thought.

“Because Mama is Mama.”

Then she touched Evelyn's hand.

“And you're Mama Evelyn.”

Rose nodded.

“We can have both.”
