Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT THE WINDOWS BROKE

The bakery windows shattered at 2:13 in the morning.

Rose woke to the sound of glass.

She lived above the shop with Tessa.

By the time she reached the stairs, the alarm was screaming.

Two front windows had been smashed.

Red paint covered the door.

Across the glass, someone had written:

CLOSE YOUR MOUTH.

Rose stood frozen.

Tessa appeared behind her.

"Oh my God."

Rose turned.

"Go upstairs."

"Rose—"

"Please."

She called the police.

Then Miriam.

Then Luca.

He arrived while officers were still photographing the damage.

His face changed when he saw the broken windows.

"Who did this?"

Rose shook her head.

"We don't know."

He looked toward the street.

For one frightening moment, she saw the man everyone whispered about.

Cold.

Controlled.

Ready to make someone pay.

"Luca."

He turned.

"Don't."

He stared.

"Rose—"

"I know what you're thinking."

"You don't."

"Then tell me."

He looked at the broken glass.

"I want whoever did this to regret it."

Rose stepped closer.

"And what happens afterward?"

He said nothing.

"What happens when someone retaliates? When your people decide the next person deserves punishment? When this becomes another feud?"

Luca looked away.

Rose's voice softened.

"I don't want you to become worse because someone hurt me."

He closed his eyes.

Then took a breath.

"You're right."

She touched his hand.

"Help me clean up."

He looked at her.

"That's what you want?"

"Yes."

So Luca Benedetti, a man who had once commanded dangerous people with a phone call, spent the next four hours sweeping broken glass from a bakery floor.

At sunrise, the neighborhood arrived.

A carpenter offered temporary boards.

A hardware store donated supplies.

Customers brought coffee.

A local artist volunteered to paint the replacement window.

And Tessa created a fundraising page.

Rose protested.

"I don't want charity."

Tessa looked at her.

"It's not charity."

"What is it?"

"People helping someone who has helped them."

By evening, the bakery had received enough donations and prepaid orders to cover the repairs.

Rose sat on the kitchen floor and cried.

May you like

Not because she was defeated.

Because she had spent so long believing she had to carry everything alone.
