Chapter 5 - VANESSA STOPPED BEING MY ENEMY

I met Vanessa the next morning.
Public café.
Giovanni did not come.
His idea.
“This isn’t about him,” he said.
Good.
Vanessa looked terrible.
Pregnant.
No makeup.
Hair pulled back.
Nothing like the smiling woman at the wedding.
She stared at me.
“I know you hate me.”
“I don’t.”
That surprised her.
“I did.”
Fair.
“Now?”
“I think you married Tyler.”
She almost laughed.
Then cried.
I pushed napkins toward her.
After several minutes, she said:
“He told me you two were over before you got pregnant.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He said you stopped taking birth control to keep him.”
My jaw tightened.
“That’s a lie.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because he changed the story.”
Of course.
At first:
I trapped him.
Later:
The pregnancy was an accident.
Then:
He wasn’t sure Lily was his.
That one hurt.
“Did he tell you that?”
“Yes.”
“Lily is his.”
“I know.”
“How?”
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“I found the paternity test.”
I froze.
“What paternity test?”
“Tyler had one done when Lily was a baby.”
My body went cold.
I had never consented to a paternity test.
“How?”
“He kept a cheek swab from one of his visits.”
My stomach turned.
“And?”
“99.99 percent.”
He knew.
For nearly five years.
He knew Lily was his.
Yet he still sometimes told people privately that paternity was “complicated.”
Why?
Excuse.
Reputation.
Freedom.
Vanessa whispered:
“I thought he was telling the truth about you.”
“So did a lot of people.”
“I was cruel.”
“Yes.”
She flinched.
I did not soften it.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I nodded.
Not forgiveness.
Receipt.
Then we discussed her father.
Robert Hartwell had been furious when Tyler joined Hartwell Medical Technologies.
Why?
Tyler was ambitious but not experienced enough.
Vanessa pushed.
She was already dating him.
Robert eventually gave Tyler a regional commercial role.
Tyler performed well.
Too well.
He became the person hospitals called when contracts risked delay.
That gave him visibility into complaints.
Not official safety access.
But enough relationships to hear.
Then Robert promoted him into a clinical-commercial liaison position.
Still not authorized for patient safety systems.
But someone gave him access credentials.
Who?
Vanessa didn’t know.
She did know one thing.
“My father has been terrified for months.”
“Of what?”
“The acquisition.”
“Losing it?”
She shook her head.
“Of it happening.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“He told me Conrad—”
“Marco?”
“Marco Fierro.”
Right.
“He said Marco was pushing the deal too fast.”
“And Celeste?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Dad never wanted Celeste engaged to Giovanni.”
That contradicted everything last night suggested.
“Then why was he standing beside Marco?”
“Because Hartwell has debt.”
There it was.
Not public.
Hartwell Medical Technologies had expanded manufacturing aggressively.
New plants.
Acquisitions.
Supply disruptions.
They borrowed.
Then one product line generated quality issues.
If the Fierro acquisition collapsed completely?
Banks could tighten.
Hartwell might be forced into asset sales.
Thousands of jobs.
Again.
Real people wrapped around bad decisions.
Vanessa said:
“Dad thought the Fierro deal could stabilize everything.”
“But?”
“He wanted an independent safety review before closing.”
“Then why didn’t he do one?”
“Marco told him any delay would trigger financing problems.”
Interesting.
Maybe Robert was not clean.
Maybe not mastermind either.
Then Vanessa reached into her bag.
A key.
“Storage locker.”
I did not touch it.
“Give it to your attorney.”
“I already did.”
Good.
She was learning quickly.
Police and corporate investigators handled the locker lawfully.
Inside were:
Laptop.
Printed emails.
Old Hartwell sales reports.
A box of personnel files.
And photographs.
Not romantic.
Surveillance.
Me leaving St. Catherine’s.
Me picking Lily up from kindergarten.
My apartment building.
My stomach turned.
Tyler had been watching us.
Why?
Then they found notes.
JH — monitor escalation.
Jessica Hale.
Another:
If she goes external, credibility issue already established.
Another:
Family history useful.
My divorce.
My finances.
My pregnancy.
My life had been converted into risk management.
Then one email changed everything.
Tyler to Marco Fierro.
Not Robert Hartwell.
Not Celeste.
Marco.
Nurse issue contained. Report closed. Hartwell side doesn’t need visibility unless repeated.
Giovanni’s uncle replied:
Good. We need clean diligence through Q1.
I stared.
The conspiracy was not Fierro versus Hartwell.
It crossed both companies.
Marco wanted the acquisition.
Tyler wanted his promotion and Hartwell shares.
Safety reports threatened valuation.
So Tyler helped bury them.
May you like
And Giovanni’s own uncle knew.
