Chapter 8 - The Night the Hospital Went Dark

The power failed at Hartwick County General at 2:17 in the morning.

For a fraction of a second, the hospital fell silent.

Then emergency lighting came on.

Backup systems activated.

Monitors continued beeping.

Staff moved immediately to established downtime procedures.

Emily was in the emergency department, helping assess a patient with shortness of breath.

She looked toward the ceiling.

The lights flickered.

Patty appeared beside her.

“Generator's on.”

Emily nodded.

“Good.”

Then the communication system failed.

For several minutes, internal calls were unreliable.

The charge nurse began coordinating by radio.

Emily focused on her patient.

Hospitals trained for disruptions.

But something about this one felt wrong.

Outside, a vehicle alarm sounded.

Then another.

---

Adrian was still an inpatient, recovering from surgery.

His room was on an upper floor.

When the emergency lighting changed, he looked toward the door.

A security officer entered.

“Mr. Moretti, we need to move you.”

Adrian frowned.

“Why?”

“Precaution.”

“Whose order?”

The officer hesitated.

That was enough.

Adrian looked toward the hallway.

Two men in dark jackets stood near the elevators.

They weren't hospital staff.

And they weren't part of the security team assigned to him.

He reached for his phone.

No signal.

Then the room door opened wider.

One of the men stepped inside.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Adrian recognized him.

A man who once worked for Victor.

“Your uncle wants to talk.”

Adrian leaned back against the pillows.

“Tell him to call my attorney.”

The man smiled.

“I'm afraid he wasn't asking.”

---

Downstairs, Emily was completing a patient handoff when Patty grabbed her arm.

“Emily.”

“What?”

“Two men just asked for your badge number.”

Her stomach tightened.

“Who?”

“Security, supposedly.”

Emily looked toward the hallway.

The men weren't there.

“Did they say why?”

“No.”

She took a breath.

Then called the hospital's designated emergency coordinator through the functioning backup channel.

She reported the suspicious inquiry.

Security procedures were activated.

Patient care continued.

Emily did not leave her assignment until another nurse formally took over.

Then she moved to a supervised staff area.

For once, she refused to let fear convince her she had to solve a dangerous situation alone.

---

The emergency coordinator notified law enforcement through an appropriate independent channel.

Agent Bishop was already monitoring threats connected to the Moretti investigation.

She contacted hospital administration.

The suspicious visitors were located on security footage.

Their identities were not immediately confirmed.

Then a camera showed them entering the upper floor where Adrian was recovering.

Security staff responded.

The two men attempted to leave through a stairwell.

One was detained by arriving officers.

The other fled into the parking garage.

No patients were harmed.

But the incident confirmed something investigators had suspected.

Someone had used the power interruption as an opportunity to approach Adrian.

---

Emily learned about the incident after her shift.

She stood beside Patty in the staff lounge.

Her hands trembled around a paper cup.

“He was here,” she whispered.

“Who?”

“Victor's people.”

Patty looked at her.

“Emily, you need to be careful.”

“I know.”

“You keep saying that.”

Emily smiled weakly.

Patty sat beside her.

“Listen to me. You're a good nurse. You helped someone who was dying. But you do not have to become the person who fixes every terrible thing connected to him.”

Emily looked down.

For six years, she'd measured her worth by how much she could carry.

Patients.

Bills.

Her mother's worries.

Now a criminal investigation.

Patty squeezed her hand.

“You deserve a life too.”

Emily began crying.

She hadn't realized how badly she needed to hear that.

---

Later that afternoon, Adrian called from a secure hospital line.

“Emily.”

She closed her eyes.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Really?”

“I'm recovering.”

She exhaled.

“What happened?”

“Men connected to my uncle tried to reach me. Hospital security intervened.”

She sat down.

“Why?”

“I don't know exactly.”

“Adrian.”

He was silent.

Emily continued.

“Don't do that.”

“Do what?”

“Give me half the truth because you think the rest will frighten me.”

He took a breath.

“You're right.”

She waited.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Victor believes I have records proving he diverted money through the charitable accounts. He thinks I can identify witnesses.”

“And can you?”

“Yes.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Then give the evidence to investigators.”

“I intend to.”

She hesitated.

“And Adrian?”

“Emily?”

“Don't let anyone convince you that protecting me means deciding what I can handle.”

A long silence followed.

Then he answered.

“I won't.”

---

That night, investigators examined the power outage.

The failure involved equipment serving part of the hospital campus.

A contractor had accessed a restricted utility area shortly beforehand.

The contractor's company had previously received payments from Rusk Security Consulting.

Agent Bishop studied the documents.

Then called Rebecca.

“We have another connection.”

Rebecca listened.

Bishop continued.

“The attempted hospital approach may be linked to the same network involved in the historical financial diversion.”

Rebecca asked whether Emily needed additional precautions.

Bishop nodded.

“Yes.”

Then she looked at the next page.

And saw something unexpected.

The contractor had also performed electrical work at the Hartwick Diner shortly before its closure.

Same company.

Same owner.

Same connection to Rusk.

Bishop stared.

For twelve years, the diner had been treated as an ordinary failed business.

May you like

Now she wondered whether its closure had been deliberately engineered.

And whether something beneath the building was worth far more to Victor Moretti than the property itself.
