Chapter 8 - THE BILLIONAIRE WHO LOST CONTROL

David stepped down as CEO voluntarily.
The news stunned everyone.
He remained majority owner.
But he appointed an independent board and outside chief executive.
Reporters called it humiliation.
David called it overdue.
For the first time since he was twenty-eight, he didn't run a company every day.
He didn't know what to do with himself.
Emily found him painting Lily's bedroom wall.
Badly.
"You're terrible."
"I've built skyscrapers."
"You've paid people to build skyscrapers."
"That's different."
"Very."
Lily pointed at a drip.
"You missed."
David sighed.
Without the CEO title, he changed.
He slept more.
Cooked occasionally.
Failed often.
Attended Lily's school events.
Started working directly with the Harrison Foundation.
Emily continued at the company.
She refused to quit simply because they were dating.
Her facilities role grew.
So did her confidence.
She completed her first semester with straight A's.
David framed the transcript.
She made him take it down because it was embarrassing.
He moved it into his office instead.
One year after Christmas Eve, the three returned to Harrison Tower for the company holiday party.
Emily wore a dark blue dress.
Lily wore red.
David waited near the tree.
For a second, Emily saw the scene from the previous year.
The cleaning cart.
The leftover food.
Her daughter's hungry eyes.
She almost cried.
David noticed.
"You okay?"
She nodded.
"Just remembering."
Lily ran toward the dessert table.
Emily laughed.
Then David handed her something.
A small envelope.
"If this is money, I swear—"
"It isn't."
Inside was a photograph.
The original picture of Claire.
Beside it was another photograph.
Daniel.
The images had been mounted together.
Below them was a plaque:
CLAIRE HARRISON & DANIEL CARTER
RIVERGATE COMMUNITY SAFETY FUND
Emily covered her mouth.
David explained.
The settlement money recovered from former executives had been placed into a fund for building-safety advocacy.
Named after the two people who tried to stop the fraud.
Emily cried openly.
David held her.
Then Lily appeared with cake.
"Why is everybody crying?"
Emily laughed.
"Happy crying."
Lily nodded.
May you like
"Okay."
She understood that category.
