Chapter 5 - ELENA DIDN’T WANT HIS COMPANY

Elena created Morales & Moon, a tiny children’s design studio named after Mateo and Sophia’s favorite bedtime story.

She did not ask Alexander for investment.

He offered once.

She said no.

He never offered again.

Instead, she took business classes.

Hired a small production consultant.

Worked with a carpenter Mateo once knew.

Her first product was a wooden moon theater based on one of his unfinished sketches.

Only five hundred units.

They sold out.

Alexander congratulated her.

She replied:

“Do not buy all five hundred next time.”

“I bought three.”

“You have one child?”

“I have none.”

“Exactly.”

Sophia had begun spending occasional afternoons at Wonderland.

Always with Elena’s knowledge.

Never secretly.

She liked the repair workshop downstairs more than the luxury showroom.

She sat beside old craftsmen.

Asked questions.

Collected broken toy wheels.

And followed Alexander around as though he were a very tall, very expensive employee.

One afternoon she asked:

“Why don't you have kids?”

Naomi nearly walked into a shelf.

Alexander answered carefully.

“I never did.”

“Why?”

“I worked a lot.”

“That’s not how kids happen.”

Naomi left the room laughing.

Alexander closed his eyes.

“Please ask your mother.”

Sophia considered.

“Did you want them?”

That question was harder.

“Yes.”

Once.

Alexander had been engaged at thirty-three.

Her name was Catherine Wells.

She wanted a home outside the city.

Children.

Weekends without business calls.

Alexander wanted expansion.

London.

Los Angeles.

Private-equity funding.

He kept saying:

After the next store.

After the next deal.

After the next milestone.

Catherine eventually stopped waiting.

She married someone else.

Had two sons.

Alexander never blamed her.

At least not anymore.

Sophia asked:

“Do you get lonely?”

“Yes.”

She nodded solemnly.

“Mom does too.”

Alexander stared.

“Sophia.”

“What?”

“You cannot arrange adults.”

“Why?”

“Because you’re six.”

“I’m almost seven.”

Apparently that changed everything.

Elena was horrified when she heard.

“I am so sorry.”

Alexander laughed.

“Stop apologizing for her.”

“She has no filter.”

“I noticed.”

Their friendship grew.

Coffee.

Occasional dinners with Sophia.

Museum trips.

A trip to the Bronx Zoo where Alexander wore the wrong shoes and complained for six hours.

Elena enjoyed that immensely.

But every time he came too close emotionally, she stepped back.

One evening they sat outside a small Queens café after Sophia fell asleep with her head in Elena’s lap.

Alexander asked:

“Are you afraid of me?”

Elena thought.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“I’m afraid of what people like you can change without noticing.”

He listened.

“When you walk into a restaurant, people move.”

“When you call a bank, someone answers.”

“When you dislike a contract, six attorneys appear.”

She looked down at Sophia.

“I spent years learning that no one came when I called.”

Alexander did not defend himself.

“So if this becomes…”

She gestured between them.

“…something, I need to know I can still say no.”

“You can.”

“Not just romantically.”

“I know.”

“My company stays mine.”

“Yes.”

“My apartment.”

“Yes.”

“You don't solve every problem with money.”

He hesitated.

She noticed.

“Alexander.”

“I am working on that one.”

She laughed.

Then became serious.

“And Sophia is not how you get to me.”

His expression changed.

“I would never—”

“I know.”

She stopped him.

“That isn't an accusation.”

“It’s a rule.”

He nodded.

“Good rule.”

Weeks later, Elena kissed him first.

Sophia found out two days later.

“How?”

Elena asked.

Sophia stared.

“Mom, you put lipstick on to go buy milk.”

Fair.

Their relationship did not transform into a fairy tale.

Alexander worked too much.

Elena hated his tendency to schedule leisure.

He once sent her a calendar invitation titled:

UNSTRUCTURED SATURDAY.

She almost broke up with him.

He never did it again.

Then Wonderland’s independent royalty review uncovered evidence that Richard Vale had diverted part of the unpaid designer funds into a private bonus pool.

Lawyers contacted former executives.

Investigators became involved.

Alexander’s board wanted the matter quiet.

Alexander refused.

Not because Elena asked.

She didn't.

Because he finally understood:

May you like

If he changed only when Sophia was watching, he had not changed at all.
