Chapter 6 - The Chairman's Signature

Julian Vance stepped forward, pulling a thin leather portfolio from his briefcase and placing it onto the desk in front of Brenda.
“Let’s review the financial ledger, Miss Vance,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a register of icy, devastating precision.
He opened the folder, revealing certified copies of my mother's bank statements and title deeds:
The Siphoned Savings: Over the preceding eight months, Brenda had diverted $18,400 from my mother’s retirement account into her personal checking account, using the money to finance shopping trips and weekend resort vacations.
The Stolen Rent: The $1,200 monthly rent assistance I had wired from Florida to help Brenda's family had been used to lease an imported BMW convertible.
The Fraudulent Deed Transfer: The quitclaim deed on my mother's bungalow had been forged using a fake notary stamp procured from a suspended paralegal.
“You thought Evelyn was an abandoned, defenseless widow,” Julian continued, his eyes piercing straight through Brenda’s soul. “You believed Clara was an insignificant nurse with empty pockets who could never challenge you in a courtroom.”
Julian tapped the bottom line of the hospital’s ownership charter displayed on his tablet.
There, in bold gold leaf beneath the corporate seal of St. Louis Memorial, was the official title:
THE VANCE GLOBAL HEALTHCARE TRUST — JULIAN VANCE, SOLE EXECUTOR & CHAIRMAN.
Brenda sank onto her knees on the linoleum floor, her designer shopping bags spilling across the tiles. “Mr. Vance... please... we didn't know she was connected to you! We’re your distant relatives! We share the same last name!”
“The only thing we share is an alphabet, Brenda,” Julian replied with freezing contempt. “My family built our name on honor, integrity, and saving human lives. You dragged that name into elder abuse, grand larceny, and attempted premeditated murder.”
Julian turned to Detective Miller.
“Officer, remove these parasites from my hospital. File every felony charge the prosecutor can draft: Attempted Depraved-Heart Murder, Grand Larceny, Vulnerable Adult Exploitation, and Forgery.”
“With pleasure, Mr. Vance,” Detective Miller replied.
Two officers stepped forward, twisting Brenda’s arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around her wrists. She shrieked, kicking and thrashing as she was dragged toward the door.

Beatrice wept hysterically, covering her face with her fur coat as she was escorted out in chains behind her daughter.
As the heavy oak doors clicked shut, the suffocating darkness that had poisoned my mother’s life was banished forever.
