Chapter 1

A Rich Boy Shared His Dinner With a Homeless Child at a Charity Gala… Then His Mother Saw They Had the Same Birthmark and Uncovered an Impossible Truth

The grand ballroom of the Hamilton Grand Hotel shimmered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Soft violin music floated through the room while waiters moved gracefully between elegantly dressed guests, carrying silver trays of champagne and expensive appetizers.

The annual Montgomery Foundation Gala had attracted some of Chicago’s most powerful people.

Business executives discussed investments beside marble columns. Politicians smiled for photographers. Socialites compared vacation homes and designer gowns while pretending not to notice who had arrived wearing last season’s fashion.

At the center of it all stood Isabella Montgomery.

Her emerald-green gown had been designed exclusively for her. A strand of rare pearls rested against her throat, and every detail of her appearance had been carefully chosen.

Isabella understood the importance of appearances.

She had spent years making sure the Montgomery name represented wealth, influence, and perfection. That evening was supposed to strengthen her reputation and raise millions for charitable causes.

Everything had been planned flawlessly.

Yet while Isabella greeted donors and posed for photographs, she failed to notice that her eight-year-old son had disappeared from the ballroom.

Matthew had grown tired of listening to adults talk about generosity while barely looking at the people they claimed to help.

He quietly slipped away from the crowd and followed the smell of roasted meat toward the service corridor behind the kitchens.

Near the loading entrance, he found another boy crouched beside the wall.

The child looked about Matthew’s age, but his life could not have been more different.

His shirt was several sizes too large and torn along one sleeve. Dirt streaked his cheeks, and his bare feet were covered in dried mud. He looked exhausted, frightened, and desperately hungry.

Matthew stopped a few feet away.

The boy immediately pressed himself against the wall.

“I’m not stealing,” he said quickly. “I was only looking.”

Matthew glanced toward the nearby buffet tables.

“Are you hungry?”

The boy stared at him as though the question had an obvious answer.

Matthew hurried back into the ballroom. A few minutes later, he returned carrying a plate piled with roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetables, and warm bread.

He lowered himself onto the polished marble floor and held out the plate.

The boy hesitated.

“Is that for me?”

Matthew nodded.

The child grabbed the plate and began eating so quickly that he could barely breathe between bites.

“Slow down,” Matthew said gently. “No one is going to take it from you.”

The boy stopped chewing and looked at him uncertainly.

“You promise?”

“I promise.”

For the first time, some of the fear left the child’s eyes.

Matthew sat beside him while he ate.

“What’s your name?”

“Luke.”

“I’m Matthew.”

Luke glanced toward the glittering ballroom.

“Do you live here?”

Matthew laughed softly.

“No. My mom is hosting the party.”

Luke’s expression changed.

“Then maybe I should go.”

“Not until you finish eating.”

Luke looked down at the plate.

No one had spoken to him that kindly in a long time.

Before he could respond, the sharp sound of high heels echoed through the corridor.

Isabella had finally noticed her son’s absence. After searching through the ballroom, she found him sitting on the floor beside a dirty, barefoot child.

Embarrassment struck before compassion had a chance to reach her heart.

“Matthew!”

Her voice cut through the music.

Several guests turned toward the corridor.

Matthew looked up.

“Mom?”

Isabella marched toward him, her expression tight with anger.

“What are you doing down there?”

“He was hungry.”

Luke scrambled to his feet, nearly dropping the plate.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. I didn’t take anything.”

Matthew immediately stepped between Luke and his mother.

“He didn’t steal it. I gave it to him.”

Isabella stared at the boy’s torn clothes and muddy feet. All she could think about was the attention they were attracting.
