Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO DID NOT BECOME HIS CURE

Aliyah graduated the following spring.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Her mother should have been there.

That hurt.

Her father had died when she was young.

No siblings.

For years, she assumed graduation would mean sitting alone after the ceremony.

Instead, June Kline came.

Professor Grant.

Patrick from the Red Lion.

Half the bookstore staff.

Leo.

And Victor.

He sat in the third row.

Not front.

Not surrounded by security.

When Aliyah crossed the stage, Patrick screamed louder than anyone.

Victor clapped.

Simply clapped.

Afterward, he handed her a box.

She narrowed her eyes.

“Expensive?”

“No.”

“If there are diamonds—”

“There aren't.”

Inside was the blue-E handkerchief.

Professionally conserved.

Framed between archival glass.

Aliyah looked up.

“Victor.”

“There is something behind it.”

She turned the frame.

A small plaque.

ELENA MALENKOV

RENEE BROOKS

TWO WOMEN WHO REFUSED TO STAY SILENT

Aliyah started crying.

Victor looked alarmed.

“Bad?”

“No.”

She laughed through tears.

“No.”

He relaxed slightly.

“I thought it should belong to both families now.”

Aliyah hugged him.

In public.

Victor's body tensed.

Then released.

His arms came around her.

No one gasped.

No pub went silent.

No traumatic memory took over the moment.

Just a hug.

Later that night, they walked beside the Charles River.

Aliyah said:

“I love you.”

Victor stopped.

She laughed nervously.

“That looked painful.”

“I wasn't prepared.”

“I noticed.”

Victor looked at her.

“I love you too.”

She waited.

He continued.

“And I know that does not make you responsible for keeping me well.”

Good.

“It doesn't make you responsible for my grief.”

Better.

“It doesn't make you Elena.”

Aliyah's eyes filled.

“Best answer.”

Victor smiled.

May you like

“I studied.”

She took his hand.
