Chapter 13 - THE BUSINESS BUILT FROM BROKEN DREAMS

Little Lantern grew faster than I expected.

The first boutique order led to another.

Then a local parenting magazine featured the collection.

Then an online retailer contacted me.

Within eighteen months, I had hired three seamstresses and rented a small studio.

The studio wasn't glamorous.

The walls needed painting.

The heating system rattled.

And the coffee machine broke every other week.

But it was mine.

Every invoice was real.

Every contract was honest.

Every paycheck represented work someone had actually done.

I hired women who needed flexible schedules.

Single mothers.

Caregivers.

People returning to work after difficult years.

I remembered what it felt like to choose between earning money and being present for someone you loved.

I wanted Little Lantern to be different.

One afternoon, Eli visited the studio.

He was five now.

He wore a blue jacket from our newest collection.

The elephant embroidered near the pocket was slightly crooked.

He loved it anyway.

“Mommy?”

“Yes?”

“Did you make all these clothes?”

I smiled.

“Not by myself.”

He looked around.

“Are you the boss?”

I laughed.

“I guess I am.”

He considered that.

Then asked:

“Can I be the boss of cookies?”

The entire studio erupted in laughter.

That evening, Grandpa came to visit.

He stood in the doorway watching the employees work.

His eyes filled.

“You built this.”

I smiled.

“With help.”

He nodded.

“That's how good things are built.”

Later, he handed me a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of my mother.

She stood at a drafting table.

Smiling.

Holding a pencil.

On the back, Grandpa had written:

She would be proud of you.

I began crying.

For years, I had believed my life was a story about what Brent took from me.

Now I understood it was becoming a story about what I could create.
