Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE ELENA WANTED LEO TO HAVE

Dominic found one final document among Elena’s papers.
Not evidence.
A house listing.
Small compared with the Moretti estate.
Five bedrooms.
Backyard.
Garden.
Neighborhood outside Boston.
Printed seven years earlier.
Across the top Elena had written:
Maybe somewhere normal?
Dominic stared at it for days.
Then called me.
“Would you hate leaving the estate?”
I looked around.
Marble.
Security.
History.
Ghosts.
“No.”
“What about the kids?”
“Ask them.”
Leo said:
“Does the new house have a basketball hoop?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
Lily asked:
“Can I paint my room purple?”
“No,” Dominic said.
“Yes,” I said.
We moved.
Not because Dominic became poor.
He was still wealthy.
Still powerful.
Still owned companies.
Still had security.
But home became a home instead of headquarters.
The estate remained for business events and staff offices.
Dominic sold part of the surrounding property.
Kept Elena’s garden preserved.
At the new house, neighbors borrowed tools.
Children rang the doorbell.
Dominic hated unannounced doorbells.
Therapy.
I eventually moved in permanently.
Then he proposed.
No giant diamond at dinner.
He knew better.
We were washing dishes.
Lily and Leo were upstairs arguing about a video game.
Dominic said:
“I have a question.”
“If this is about the dishwasher, no.”
“It’s not.”
He took out a ring.
I stared.
“Dominic.”
“I know.”
“You planned this?”
“For four months.”
“That is terrifying.”
“Yes.”
Then he did not kneel.
I liked that.
He simply said:
“I used to think family stayed because leaving me was difficult.”
My chest tightened.
“I don’t want that anymore.”
He looked at me.
“I want a wife who can tell me no.”
“Dangerous preference.”
“I’m aware.”
“I want Lily to know she owes me nothing.”
“I want Leo to know love isn’t fear.”
“And I want you here.”
Pause.
“If you want to be.”
There.
The most important part.
I said yes.
We signed a prenuptial agreement.
Separate counsel.
Clear protections.
Dominic complained the lawyers were insulting.
I told him healthy paperwork is romantic.
He disagreed.
Still signed.
Wedding small.
Leo stood beside Dominic.
Lily threw petals aggressively at everyone.
Mrs. Gable cried again.
Nobody mentioned it.
Then something unexpected happened.
Before the ceremony, Dominic took Leo into a quiet room.
He gave him Elena’s photograph.
The original.
The one Lily found.
On the back:
Dominic, if anything happens to me, don’t let Leo believe it was his fault.
Leo was old enough now.
He read it himself.
Then the date.
He knew the story.
Age-appropriate pieces over years.
He looked at Dominic.
“Mom saved me.”
Dominic shook his head.
“No.”
Leo frowned.
“She left the letter.”
“Yes.”
“But?”
“She reminded me how to be your father.”
Leo started crying.
Then:
“Can Isabella still be my mom too?”
Dominic looked toward the door where I stood.
My throat closed.
I crouched beside Leo.
“Only if you want.”
He hugged me.
“Okay.”
Simple.
Not replacing Elena.
Expanding love.
Dominic looked away because he was crying.
Lily shouted from the hallway:
“WEDDING NOW!”
We laughed.
May you like
Elena’s photograph stayed with Leo.
Not hidden anymore.
