Chapter 8 - EMILY LEARNS TO BE DIFFICULT

Two years after leaving Daniel, Emily did something that made me absurdly proud.

She returned a sofa.

Not dramatic.

She bought it online.

Wrong color.

The store initially refused the return because packaging had been removed.

Old Emily would have apologized.

Kept it.

Lost $1,700.

New Emily spent forty minutes on the phone quoting the company's return policy.

They picked it up Tuesday.

She called me.

“I was horrible.”

“You enforced a written policy.”

“I asked for a supervisor.”

“Monster.”

She laughed.

That was recovery.

Not becoming fearless.

Learning discomfort would not kill her.

She started therapy.

Joined a small support group for people leaving controlling relationships.

At first she hated the language.

“Abuse sounds too big.”

Her counselor asked:

“Compared to what?”

Emily had no answer.

Control does not need to be the worst thing imaginable before it matters.

She also returned to social life.

Coffee.

Design events.

A pottery class she abandoned after making three terrible bowls.

No rushing into romance.

Then she met Marcus Reed.

Not the notary Marcus.

Thank God.

I insisted on surnames.

Marcus Reed taught middle-school science.

Divorced.

No children.

Patient.

The first time Emily told me about him, I asked too many questions.

She stared.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“I'm thirty-three.”

“Unfortunately.”

She laughed.

Their relationship moved slowly.

Six months before he knew about the house.

Not because Emily hid it strategically.

Because property was not the most important thing about her.

When she finally told him, Marcus said:

“Okay.”

She waited.

“That’s it?”

“Is there supposed to be a quiz?”

She called me afterward crying.

Good crying.

Apparently we needed categories.

Marcus never moved in during the first two years.

When he eventually did, they signed a cohabitation agreement.

Emily insisted.

He said:

“Excellent.”

May you like

Growth.
