Chapter 8 - BEST PILOT EVER

Six months after the flight, I found Mason’s drawing.
Still folded.
Hidden inside a desk drawer.
BEST PILOT EVER.
Tyler beside an airplane.
I sat on the floor holding it.
Then Mason walked in.
“You found it.”
“Yes.”
“Throw it away.”
“Do you want me to?”
He shrugged.
That meant no.
I smoothed the paper.
“Your dad did a bad thing.”
“I know.”
“He can still be good at flying.”
Mason looked annoyed.
“Why are you defending him?”
“I’m not.”
I thought.
“I’m separating things.”
“What things?”
“Someone can be good at one thing and still hurt people in another part of life.”
He stared at the drawing.
“Is he a bad dad?”
Hard question.
“He made choices that hurt you.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Again.
I smiled sadly.
“I think he is a dad who has a lot of work to do.”
Mason accepted that.
A month later, he asked Tyler to take him to an aviation museum.
Not fly.
Museum.
Tyler called me afterward.
“He asked.”
“I know.”
“I almost cried.”
“You probably did.”
“Yes.”
I smiled.
Progress.
May you like
Slow.
