Chapter 13 - THE LIFE I BUILT AFTER THE LIES

The divorce took time.

So did the financial disputes.

But eventually, the major issues were resolved.

Michael accepted responsibility for his role in the unauthorized financial activity and faced legal consequences.

The disputed account was closed.

The cottage transfer was invalidated.

Rachel and I reached a legal agreement governing our shared ownership.

Our parents remained heartbroken.

But they stopped asking me to pretend everything was normal.

Meanwhile, I rebuilt my life.

I returned to work full-time as a graphic designer.

I started taking freelance clients.

Then opened a small design studio.

The first month was terrifying.

The second was worse.

But by the end of the year, I had enough clients to hire an assistant.

Sophie began playing soccer.

Ben discovered a passion for dinosaurs.

Our house became noisy again.

Not because everything was perfect.

But because laughter had returned.

One evening, Sophie climbed onto the couch beside me.

“Mom?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“Are you happy?”

I looked at her.

Then smiled.

“I'm getting there.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Then she hugged me.

And I realized something.

I hadn't lost my family.

My family had changed.

But the love that mattered most was still there.
