Chapter 8 - THE CREDIT LINE

The bank did not call the loan merely because I filed for divorce.
That was one of my fears.
Instead, divorce triggered review because a guarantor’s financial circumstances were changing.
The bank requested updated statements.
Naomi recommended the company negotiate a restructuring before renewal.
Daniel and I met with attorneys, the bank, and an independent restructuring adviser.
Charles hated every minute.
At one meeting, he said:
“This company survived recessions before Claire was even here.”
The adviser answered:
“And today it has different leverage.”
Charles looked offended by arithmetic.
I remained liable under the existing guarantee until it was modified, released, paid, or otherwise resolved according to the documents.
Divorce did not magically erase it.
That was the price of having signed.
So I negotiated.
Not as a wife.
As a guarantor.
I agreed not to demand immediate changes that could destabilize the facility while the company pursued replacement support.
In return:
No additional borrowing above agreed limits without my written consent.
No new related-party payments outside ordinary reviewed contracts.
Quarterly independent reporting.
A defined timeline for replacing my guarantee.
Suspension of certain discretionary distributions.
Charles called it humiliating.
I called it lending discipline.
Over nine months, Harrington Development sold one non-core parcel.
Completed Riverbend phase one.
Reduced the revolver.
Daniel personally pledged additional business interests.
An outside investor provided limited preferred capital under terms the family hated but could live with.
Eventually, my guarantee was reduced.
Then released.
The day Elena—my lawyer, not my mother—called to say the bank had executed the release, I sat in my car and cried.
Not because I had won.
Because for the first time in eighteen months, a family I was divorcing could no longer make a business decision that might reach directly into my personal assets.

Freedom sometimes arrives as a seven-page bank document.
