Chapter 9 - THE NOTE I WROTE

A year after Maya’s birth, Evelyn and I remained married.

Barely.

That is the honest version.

Therapy twice a week at first.

Then weekly.

Separate therapy too.

We did not renew vows.

Did not go on a romantic second honeymoon.

Did not pretend the crisis made us stronger.

For a while, it made us strangers.

Evelyn had to discover who I was when I wasn't defending my mother.

I had to discover who she was when she wasn't trying to stay easy to love.

Sometimes we liked what we found.

Sometimes we didn't.

One night, Evelyn left her phone on the kitchen counter.

Notes open.

I saw the old folder.

Same dates.

Same evidence.

I looked away.

Then opened my own phone.

Started a note.

April 22, 9:14 p.m.

Evelyn said she was angry that I invited my brother without asking.

I wanted to explain.

I stopped.

I apologized.

I stared at it.

Then laughed.

Evelyn walked in.

“What?”

I showed her.

She read it.

Then started laughing too.

“You’re documenting yourself?”

“Yes.”

“That’s insane.”

“Probably.”

She became quiet.

Then:

“Why?”

I thought.

“Because your notes were created so you could trust your memory.”

I looked at her.

“I want mine to remind me what I’m supposed to change.”

She kissed me.

First spontaneous kiss in months.

No dramatic music.

No miracle.

Just a kiss.

May you like

It meant more than our wedding anniversary that year.
