Chapter 4 - WHY THEY CALLED ME UNSTABLE

The independent review began Monday.

Dad’s special voting authority was temporarily suspended.

He remained CEO.

Still wealthy.

Still involved.

But major trust-share votes moved to the institutional trustee.

Blackridge did not collapse.

No employees were marched out.

No buildings vanished.

Governance simply became inconvenient.

My father treated inconvenience like assault.

He sent me three emails through counsel.

Then five.

I answered none personally.

The auditors requested:

Related-party contracts.

Executive compensation.

Family loans.

Asset transfers.

Corporate-aircraft logs.

Consulting agreements.

Vendor relationships.

Charitable contributions involving Mercer family entities.

Four weeks later, Samuel Pike called my attorney.

Not me directly.

He had found something.

An internal strategy memo.

Prepared eleven months after I went no-contact.

Subject:

FAMILY PROTECTOR CONTINGENCY

My attorney read it to me.

If Natalie Mercer refused future protector certifications, possible remedies included:

Negotiated waiver.

Replacement through court petition.

Challenge based on incapacity.

Evidence supporting incapacity:

Family statements regarding emotional instability, estrangement, erratic decision-making, hostility toward immediate relatives.

I stopped breathing.

Ethan sat beside me.

His jaw tightened.

My attorney continued.

Attached were:

Screenshots of messages from Mom.

Statements Claire had made to relatives.

Dad’s notes claiming I had “abruptly cut off the family without rational cause.”

They had taken my no-contact boundary—

then converted it into a potential litigation file.

The smear suddenly had a purpose.

Maybe it did not begin as strategy.

But later, someone recognized its usefulness.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because if I didn’t laugh, I might break something.

Ethan said:

“They were building a record.”

“Yes.”

My attorney added:

“There’s more.”

A draft affidavit from Claire.

Never filed.

It said:

Natalie has demonstrated increasingly paranoid beliefs about family motives and finances.

Finances.

Before I even knew there was a financial problem.

Interesting.

Then:

She frequently interprets ordinary family decisions as evidence of favoritism or conspiracy.

My graduation.

The fake dinner story.

The “downgrade” comments.

All of it rewritten as symptoms.

That was when anger became something colder.

Useful.

I told my attorney:

“Preserve everything.”

No social media.

No family confrontation.

No dramatic accusation.

Records.

May you like

Because people who weaponize stories often underestimate documents.
