Chapter 9 - MOM CAME TO MY FRONT DOOR

Mom stayed angry for almost two years.

Then she appeared at my townhouse.

No warning.

No flowers.

No dramatic basket.

Just Diane.

Sophia was five.

She opened the door before I could stop her.

“Grandma!”

Mom froze.

So did I.

Sophia remembered enough to know Grandma.

Not enough to know whether she should hate her.

Children are unfairly generous that way.

Mom started crying.

I did not invite her in immediately.

“What do you need?”

“To apologize.”

“For what?”

Her face changed.

Good question.

She looked at Sophia.

Then at me.

“For forging your signature.”

“For throwing away her food.”

“For calling you a parasite.”

“For accepting your money while pretending you gave nothing.”

I waited.

Then:

“And for being angry that the apartment belonged to you when I was the one who gave it to you.”

That one was new.

She whispered:

“I felt ashamed.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed my daughter to save me.”

“So I rewrote the story.”

“If you were dependent on me, then I didn’t have to admit how dependent I had become on you.”

There it was.

The truth.

Not flattering.

Not convenient.

True.

I let her inside.

Not back into my life fully.

Inside for coffee.

That was all.

Trust returned slowly.

Supervised visits with Sophia at first.

Then lunches.

Then birthdays.

Mom never again had access to my finances.

Never held a spare key.

Boundaries stayed.

Love eventually returned around them.

May you like

Not through them.
