Chapter 7 - I DIDN’T MOVE BACK INTO THE APARTMENT

Everyone assumed I would.

Karla.

Dad.

Even Mrs. Gable.

“You finally have your home back,” she said.

But standing in the empty apartment felt strange.

Too many memories.

Mom yelling.

Dad disappearing behind a newspaper.

My divorce.

Sophia crying.

The sink.

I did not want victory badly enough to sleep there.

So I made a different decision.

I sold it.

Not immediately.

First I repaired years of deferred maintenance.

Paint.

Plumbing.

Electrical work.

Nothing luxurious.

Then the apartment sold for $612,000.

After taxes, fees, legal costs, repairs, and remaining legitimate obligations tied to the property itself, I received enough to completely change my future.

Not billionaire money.

Freedom money.

I used part as a down payment on a modest two-bedroom townhouse.

My name only.

Small backyard.

Good preschool nearby.

Sophia chose the bedroom with the yellow wall.

“Like my coat.”

Exactly.

I placed the rest into retirement, emergency savings, and an education account for Sophia.

No luxury car.

No revenge vacation.

No social-media announcement.

I simply stopped being financially fragile.

The first evening in our new home, I made chicken soup.

Sophia sat at our tiny table.

She stared into the bowl.

Then looked at me.

“Grandma throw this?”

My heart cracked.

“No.”

“No one throws your dinner away here.”

She smiled.

“Okay.”

Then ate three noodles and declared herself finished.

Toddlers.

I laughed until I cried.

That night, I sat on the floor surrounded by moving boxes.

May you like

For the first time since my divorce—

I felt home.
