Chapter 9 - DIANE’S LETTER

Two years after the move, I received an envelope at my London office.

No return address.

Inside:

A handwritten letter.

Diane.

Elena,

I still believe selling the house without telling Eric was cruel.

I laughed immediately.

Promising start.

Then:

But I also understand why you believed you had to make the decision without us. We had already demonstrated that we treated your “no” as the beginning of negotiation instead of an answer.

I stopped laughing.

She continued.

I spent years thinking you looked down on me because you never seemed to need anyone.

I see now that I punished you for that.

When you helped save my house, I let people believe Eric did it because the truth embarrassed me.

When you helped Harold’s company, I called it our family business while treating you like an outsider.

When Madison needed somewhere to stay, I assumed the person with the most resources had the greatest obligation.

I never asked what you wanted.

I read that paragraph twice.

Then:

You did not break the family by leaving.

You exposed habits we should have changed before you ever arrived.

I am sorry.

Diane.

No request.

No demand for forgiveness.

No invitation.

Better.

I wrote back one sentence.

Thank you for saying it clearly. I wish you well.

That was enough.

Forgiveness does not always require reunion.

Sometimes peace is just the absence of unfinished argument.
