Chapter 8 - MOM ASKED TO MEET CLARA AGAIN

Mom did not see Clara for almost a year.

My decision.

Grant supported it.

Not because Diane had physically hurt my daughter.

Because she reached for a newborn after I clearly told her no, while simultaneously portraying me as medically confused.

That terrified me.

Trust needed rebuilding before access.

Mom hated the boundary.

She called it punishment.

Then manipulation.

Then Grant’s influence.

Eventually, after enough people stopped agreeing with her, she called it what it was.

A consequence.

She went to counseling.

At first, I assumed she was doing it to get Clara back.

Maybe she was.

Change does not always begin for noble reasons.

A year later, she sent me a letter.

No excuses.

I took your generosity and turned it into an obligation.

I taught Brielle that your boundaries were obstacles instead of answers.

At the hospital, I cared more about controlling you than understanding what you had just survived.

Then:

When you said no, I tried to take Clara because I believed being your mother gave me authority over you. It did not.

I read that sentence five times.

Grant asked:

“What do you want?”

“I don’t know.”

Good answer.

Two months later, we met Mom in a park.

Public.

Clara was almost eighteen months.

Diane cried when she saw her.

She did not reach.

That mattered.

She asked:

“May I hold her?”

I looked at Clara.

Then at Mom.

“Not today.”

Pain crossed Diane’s face.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.”

That mattered more.

At the next visit, Clara handed her a cracker.

At the fourth, I let Mom hold her.

For ten minutes.

May you like

Trust returned by teaspoons.

Not buckets.
