Chapter 8 - THE CASE

The criminal case took fourteen months.
There was no single charge that represented the whole marriage.
That surprised me.
Life likes one headline.
Law does not.
The most clearly supported incident was the surgical-site assault.
Other allegations involved prior physical conduct and interference with care.
The exact legal counts changed during the process.
Daniel eventually accepted a plea resolving several charges without a trial.
There were:
Protective orders.
Probationary conditions.
A period of incarceration tied to the most serious proven conduct.
Mandatory intervention programming.
Restrictions on contact.
The financial case remained separate.
I revoked the power of attorney immediately.
The sale of my inherited property stopped.
Funds Daniel had moved became part of divorce accounting and civil claims.
Some transfers were reversed.
Others required settlement.
My rental property stayed mine.
Not because I won a clever courtroom trick.
Because records showed where it came from and because the attempted transaction had not closed.
Our marital home was sold during divorce.
The equity was divided after legal accounting.
Daniel kept his business interest.
I kept my separate inherited property.
Retirement accounts were addressed normally.
No one became penniless.
No one secretly owned a billion-dollar company.
The divorce decree was almost boring.
I loved it.
Boring meant:
No one could force my head over anything.
May you like
No one decided whether I deserved medicine.
No one stood between me and a door.
