Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT SOMETHING OF HER OWN

By summer, I'd received a promotion.
Diane offered me a senior position overseeing process improvement across several departments.
The role came with a better salary, more responsibility, and a predictable schedule that made childcare easier to organize.
I stared at the offer.
“Are you sure?”
Diane looked offended.
“Jennifer, you've earned this.”
My eyes filled.
She smiled.
“Now stop asking whether you deserve it and tell me whether you want the job.”
I laughed.
“Yes.”
With the added financial stability, I began rebuilding Lily's savings.
I opened an account designated for her future needs and contributed what I reasonably could.
Some months, the amount was small.
Other months, I managed more.
I stopped measuring progress against what Daniel had taken.
Instead, I focused on what I could build consistently.
Andrew and I continued seeing each other.
He never asked to manage my money.
Never treated my daughter as a shortcut to my affection.
Never insisted I should forget the past.
We introduced our children gradually, with care and without forcing either of them to accept an instant new family.
Oliver liked building elaborate train tracks.
Lily liked knocking them down.
Andrew found this hilarious.
Oliver was less impressed.
One afternoon, after Lily demolished an entire station, Oliver stared at her.
“She's a tiny tornado.”
I laughed.
“Accurate.”
Andrew looked at me.
“Think she'd enjoy engineering?”
I smiled.
“She's already excellent at structural testing.”
Later that evening, Andrew walked me to my car.
“Jennifer?”
“Yes?”
“I know you've been through a lot.”
I looked down.
He continued.
“I don't want to pretend I can fix what happened.”
I nodded.
“But I'd like to keep getting to know you. At whatever pace feels right.”
I looked at him.
For the first time in a long time, the thought of trusting someone didn't immediately make me afraid.
I smiled.
“I'd like that too.”
He held out his hand.
May you like
I took it.
And something quiet and hopeful began growing between us.
