Chapter 7 - THE THING MY FATHER COULD NOT BUY

My son was born in March.

Seven pounds, two ounces.

Healthy.

Loud.

Furious about light.

I named him Graham Harrison Caldwell.

The middle name surprised my father.

He cried.

“I don’t deserve that.”

“Probably not.”

He laughed.

Then cried harder.

I chose Harrison not because everything was repaired.

Because my father had done the harder work after apologizing.

He recused himself from conflicts.

Stopped asking me to attend dinners for optics.

Started asking whether I wanted him there.

Small language.

Huge difference.

Preston arrived at the hospital with flowers.

He held Graham carefully.

Poppy climbed onto the bed beside me.

For one photograph, we were all together.

Not a marriage.

A family.

Different.

Preston later asked:

“Do you ever think we could try again?”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded.

No argument.

Progress.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

“I hate that I made you afraid to tell me you were pregnant.”

That was new.

Not apology for affair.

For the consequence.

“I hate that too.”

He looked at Graham.

“I thought providing everything was enough.”

I thought about our beautiful house.

The limestone floors.

The silence.

“No.”

“It wasn’t.”

May you like

He finally understood.
