Chapter 14 - THE LIFE I DIDN'T EXPECT

Julian and I dated slowly.

We had dinner.

Went to museums.

Walked through Central Park.

Argued about books.

Laughed about terrible movies.

He was not perfect.

He worked too much.

He sometimes became quiet when stressed.

He disliked surprises.

But he listened.

And when I told him something mattered, he treated it as important.

One evening, I asked why he had approached me at Daniel's gala.

Julian considered.

“Because you looked lonely.”

I smiled sadly.

“Was it that obvious?”

He shook his head.

“Not to everyone.”

He continued.

“I recognized the expression.”

I looked at him.

“From where?”

He hesitated.

“My first marriage.”

I stared.

Julian had been divorced for ten years.

He rarely spoke about it.

He continued.

“I spent too much time building a company and not enough time being a husband.”

I listened.

“My wife eventually left.”

His voice softened.

“She was right to.”

I studied him.

“Did you try to win her back?”

He nodded.

“At first.”

“What happened?”

“She told me that apologies weren't the same as change.”

I looked down.

Julian continued.

“So I changed.”

He smiled faintly.

“Not to get her back. Because I didn't like the man I'd become.”

I reached for his hand.

For the first time, I understood that Julian's gentleness wasn't weakness.

It was something he'd learned through regret.

Months passed.

The housing program expanded.

I helped secure new partnerships.

Julian continued supporting the foundation without interfering with my decisions.

One evening, we stood on the terrace of his townhouse overlooking the city.

He took my hand.

“Claire, I love you.”

I looked at him.

He didn't say it dramatically.

He didn't kneel.

He didn't make a speech.

He simply told me the truth.

I smiled.

“I love you, too.”

And the words felt peaceful.

Not frightening.

May you like

Not conditional.

Just true.
