Chapter 10 - THE NIGHT HE LOST HIS RESTAURANT

The first restaurant closed temporarily on a Tuesday.

Not because the food was bad.

Not because customers stopped coming.

Because a major supplier suspended deliveries after repeated payment problems.

By Thursday, the second location was operating with a limited menu.

The third was struggling to meet payroll.

Owen called me eleven times.

I answered none of the personal calls.

Through Allison, I requested an emergency meeting involving the business attorneys, accountant, and managers.

I wasn't going to abandon seventy-one employees.

But I wasn't going to rescue Owen privately and let him take the credit again.

The meeting lasted four hours.

We reviewed cash balances, outstanding invoices, vendor obligations, payroll requirements, and options for keeping viable locations open.

Marcus spoke first.

“We need someone making decisions who understands the numbers.”

Everyone looked at me.

Owen's jaw tightened.

“Rebecca has been away from operations.”

I stared at him.

“For three weeks.”

“Things have changed.”

“Yes,” I said. “Apparently they have.”

The accountant displayed the cash-flow projections.

Without immediate changes, the business would face serious liquidity problems.

I proposed an independent restructuring manager, tighter financial controls, and a transparent communication plan for employees.

Owen objected.

“This is my company.”

I looked at him.

“Our company.”

He turned toward the attorney.

“I founded Hale & Vine.”

I felt something inside me go very still.

“You cooked the food,” I said.

His face reddened.

“Excuse me?”

“You created the menu. You developed the recipes. You built the kitchen culture.”

I paused.

“And I kept the business solvent. We built it together.”

No one spoke.

I continued.

“You don't have to diminish what I contributed to make your work valuable.”

Marcus nodded.

Elena looked down at the table.

Owen said nothing.

The restructuring proposal moved forward with the necessary approvals.

It didn't solve everything.

But it gave the restaurants a chance.

That evening, Owen waited for me outside the building.

“Rebecca.”

I stopped.

He looked exhausted.

“You embarrassed me in there.”

I stared at him.

“You're worried about embarrassment?”

“You made it sound like I did nothing.”

“No. I described exactly what you did.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I don't recognize you anymore.”

I looked at him.

“That's because you've never seen me stop protecting you from consequences.”

He stepped closer.

“I miss my wife.”

For a moment, my throat tightened.

Because I missed my husband too.

Not the man standing in front of me.

The man who used to bring home leftover bread wrapped in a kitchen towel.

The man who danced with me in our first apartment.

The man who once held my hand during a miscarriage and said we'd survive anything together.

I missed someone who no longer seemed to exist.

“I miss who we were,” I said.

His eyes filled.

“Then maybe we can find our way back.”

I shook my head.

“I can't rebuild a marriage with someone who still thinks the worst thing he did was get caught.”

He looked away.

I walked toward my car.

Then my phone rang.

Allison.

“Rebecca, we have the results of the document examination.”

I stopped.

“What did they find?”

“The disputed signature records show serious inconsistencies. We also obtained evidence that your account credentials were used from a device associated with Owen during the transaction.”

I closed my eyes.

“Does that prove he did it?”

“It's significant evidence, but the investigation isn't finished.”

I leaned against my car.

Then Allison added, “Ethan has retained separate counsel.”

“Why?”

“Because the investigators are examining his role in preparing the transaction documents.”

I looked back.

Owen was still standing beneath the restaurant sign.

For eleven years, I'd watched that sign glow with pride.

Now it looked like something from another life.

May you like

And for the first time, I understood that losing the restaurant might not be the worst thing that happened to Owen.

The truth was finally catching up with him.
