Chapter 9 - THE PHOTO THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Vanessa posted the photograph on a Friday night.

Claire was sitting on Natalie's couch when Emily sent the link.

You need to see this.

Claire opened it.

The photograph showed Daniel and Vanessa at a restaurant.

Old photograph.

College years.

They were sitting close together.

Vanessa's head rested on Daniel's shoulder.

The caption read:

Some people will always be home, no matter how many years pass.

Claire stared.

The comments were worse.

You two should have gotten married.

The original couple.

Some connections never die.

Then Vanessa replied to one comment.

Timing is everything.

Claire felt sick.

Daniel saw the post twenty minutes later.

He called Vanessa.

She answered.

“Danny.”

“Take it down.”

Silence.

“What?”

“The photograph.”

Vanessa laughed.

“It's from college.”

“Take it down.”

“Why?”

“Because you know what you're implying.”

She scoffed.

“Claire sent you?”

“No.”

“Then why are you upset?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Because I'm tired of pretending you don't understand what you're doing.”

Vanessa went silent.

He continued.

“You told me you waited for me.”

She swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“You told me you wanted me to choose you.”

“I was emotional.”

“And now you're posting photographs that suggest we're together.”

Vanessa's voice hardened.

“Maybe people see what you refuse to admit.”

Daniel stared.

“There is nothing romantic between us.”

A long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Not for you.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He'd suspected.

Now he knew.

The next morning, Daniel sent Claire a message.

I saw the post. I asked Vanessa to remove it. I want you to know I didn't encourage it.

Claire read it.

Then replied:

Thank you for telling me.

A moment later, another message arrived.

I'm ending the friendship.

Claire stared.

She hadn't asked him to do that.

She'd asked for boundaries.

Honesty.

Respect.

But Vanessa had repeatedly ignored every boundary Daniel attempted to establish.

Claire typed:

That's your decision.

Daniel answered:

I know.

That afternoon, Vanessa arrived at Natalie's house.

Claire opened the door.

Vanessa stood on the porch wearing an expensive cream coat.

Her eyes were red.

“Can we talk?”

Claire hesitated.

Then stepped outside.

“What do you want?”

Vanessa looked down.

“I wanted to apologize.”

Claire folded her arms.

“For what?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“For the post.”

Claire waited.

“And dinner.”

Silence.

Vanessa continued.

“I didn't mean for things to get this bad.”

Claire stared.

“What did you mean?”

Vanessa looked away.

“I don't know.”

Claire's voice remained calm.

“Yes, you do.”

Vanessa's face tightened.

Claire continued.

“You knew Daniel would protect you. You knew he'd defend you. You knew he'd make me feel unreasonable for questioning you.”

Vanessa began crying.

“I never wanted to destroy your marriage.”

Claire looked at her.

“Then why did you keep testing whether you could?”

Silence.

Vanessa stared at the ground.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because I thought he'd choose me.”

Claire felt the words settle.

There it was.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not harmless teasing.

A competition Claire had never agreed to enter.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I loved him first.”

Claire looked at her.

“Maybe.”

Vanessa stared.

Claire continued.

“But love isn't a waiting list.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

Claire stepped back.

“You don't get to claim someone because you met them earlier.”

Silence.

“And you don't get to turn my marriage into a contest because you regret not telling him how you felt twenty years ago.”

Vanessa looked away.

Claire opened the door.

“I hope you find someone who chooses you freely.”

Vanessa looked up.

“But Daniel isn't that person.”

Claire went inside.

May you like

Closed the door.

And for the first time, she didn't feel the need to explain herself further.
