Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH NATALIE FINALLY ADMITTED

Natalie contacted me through a letter.

A real letter.

Handwritten.

Delivered to my office.

I almost threw it away.

Then I read it.

She wrote that she'd spent years believing Ethan would always be hers in some way.

Not as a husband.

Not exactly.

But as the person who would put her first.

She admitted that she'd enjoyed making me uncomfortable.

That she'd made jokes about knowing him first because she wanted me to remember that I was the newcomer.

That she'd kissed Ethan because she wanted to know whether she could still make him choose her.

I read that sentence three times.

I wanted to know whether I could still make him choose me.

She apologized.

Not perfectly.

Not without excuses.

But more honestly than she ever had.

I took the letter to therapy.

Dr. Park asked:

“What do you want to do with it?”

I stared.

“I don't know.”

“Do you feel you need to respond?”

I shook my head.

“No.”

She smiled.

“Then you don't have to.”

I didn't.

A week later, Ethan and I attended our first couples counseling session.

It was uncomfortable.

We argued.

We cried.

We said things we'd avoided for years.

Ethan admitted that he had sometimes used my calmness as permission not to change.

I admitted that I had swallowed resentment until it became impossible to discuss without anger.

Neither of us was proud.

But both of us stayed.

At the end of the session, our counselor asked:

“What do you want your marriage to feel like?”

I thought for a long moment.

Then said:

“Safe.”

Ethan looked at me.

I continued.

“I want to be able to say I'm hurt without becoming the problem.”

His eyes filled.

He took my hand.

May you like

“I want you to feel that too.”

For the first time, I believed we were talking about the same marriage.
