Chapter 6 - THE PROMOTION I HAD SAID NO TO

My former supervisor, Karen Wu, called me six weeks after I left Daniel.
“I heard you’re living with Jenna.”
“How?”
“This town contains twelve people.”
Fair.
Then:
“The regional operations position opened again.”
I laughed.
“You’re kidding.”
“I’m not.”
A year earlier, I had been offered almost the same role.
Twenty-two percent salary increase.
A team of fourteen.
Quarterly travel.
Daniel had reacted as though I announced plans to join a circus.
“What about the house?”
“What about dinner?”
“What happens when Mom has appointments?”
Then the sentence that worked:
“I thought we were building a life together.”
So I declined.
Now Karen asked:
“Do you want to interview?”
My first instinct was:
The timing is terrible.
Divorce.
Lawyers.
Lorraine’s situation.
Company accounting.
Then I heard the old machinery starting again.
Everyone else’s needs first.
“When?”
“Thursday.”
“I’ll be there.”
I got the job.
Not because leaving Daniel magically transformed my career.
Because I had already been qualified before I left him.
That mattered.
On my first travel week, I stayed two nights in Chicago.
I ordered room service.
Watched terrible television.

Nobody asked where the oatmeal was.
It was one of the most luxurious experiences of my life.
