Chapter 4 - THE VIDEO NOBODY EXPECTED

I took Grace's phone.

The video was only forty-seven seconds long.

It showed Derek sitting at his home office desk.

Sienna stood beside him.

The recording had been made weeks earlier, when Grace was preparing the foundation slideshow.

I recognized the room immediately.

The same framed photographs.

The same desk lamp.

The same enormous windows overlooking our backyard.

Derek was speaking.

"...after Saturday, Claire won't have any leverage."

Sienna laughed.

"What about the scholarship accounts?"

"We've already moved the consulting fees. The board won't notice until the annual audit."

My stomach dropped.

Then Sienna asked:

"And your wife?"

Derek leaned back.

"Claire signs whatever I put in front of her."

The video ended.

I stared at the screen.

Grace whispered, "I was making the slideshow. I was recording a practice introduction when they came in. I hid behind the couch because Dad sounded angry."

I looked at her.

"You should have told me."

"I was scared."

I hugged her.

"I'm glad you did now."

Derek reached for the phone.

"Give me that."

I stepped back.

"No."

His face hardened.

"Claire, that's private."

I looked at him.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have discussed the foundation in front of our daughter."

People were watching.

Sienna whispered, "Derek, do something."

He turned toward her.

"Be quiet."

I felt an unfamiliar calm settle over me.

Not peace.

Not forgiveness.

Something harder.

Clarity.

I reached into my purse and removed Evelyn's letter.

"Derek."

He looked at me.

"What?"

I handed him the envelope.

"Consider this formal notice that I'm ending our marriage."

His face changed.

"You're joking."

"No."

He looked around.

"You're going to do this here?"

I stared at him.

"You brought your mistress to my mother's charity gala."

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

"And you apparently thought I wouldn't notice."

Sienna stepped forward.

"This is inappropriate."

I turned toward her.

"So is diverting scholarship money."

Her expression drained.

Derek grabbed my arm.

"Enough."

I pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

Claudia appeared beside Grace.

"Come on, sweetheart."

Grace hesitated.

I knelt.

"Go with Aunt Claudia. I'll be right there."

She nodded.

Then looked at Derek.

"Dad, I still love you."

His expression faltered.

"But I'm really disappointed."

Claudia led her away.

Derek watched them go.

For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely shaken.

I leaned closer.

"That video is going to my attorney."

He swallowed.

"Claire—"

"And the foundation's independent trustees."

His face went white.

"You'll destroy everything."

I looked at the photographs of scholarship recipients projected above us.

"No, Derek."

I stepped back.

"I'm trying to save what you haven't already destroyed."

I left the ballroom before the speeches began.

Claudia drove Grace and me home.

My daughter cried quietly in the back seat.

I sat beside her and held her hand.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

I turned.

"For what?"

"For making everyone look."

I pulled her close.

"Oh, sweetheart."

She began sobbing.

"I didn't want Dad to be bad."

I kissed her hair.

"Neither did I."

She looked up.

"Is he going to jail?"

"I don't know."

"Will I still see him?"

I swallowed.

"That's something we'll work out carefully."

She nodded.

Then whispered:

"Can we go somewhere he doesn't know?"

I held her tighter.

May you like

And realized the hardest part of this story wasn't going to be exposing Derek.

It was helping Grace feel safe in a world where her father had suddenly become someone she didn't recognize.
