Chapter 3 - SOMEONE HAD BUILT A COMPANY OUT OF MY NAME

Vantage Medical was Rowan’s employer.

He worked in corporate finance.

I did not.

I worked independently as a forensic accountant and compliance consultant.

Which meant a vendor called Hayes Forensic Solutions looked plausible.

That was the genius of it.

And the horror.

I called my attorney before asking Rowan another question.

Rachel Kim arrived ninety minutes later.

Dad stayed upstairs with Leo.

Rowan remained in the kitchen because Rachel advised me not to interrogate him.

Preserve first.

Confront later.

The fake company had been incorporated eighteen months earlier.

Registered agent:

a formation service.

Mailing address:

a private mailbox.

Tax filings referenced consulting work.

The documents included my full legal name.

My old professional résumé.

My certification information.

Even a copy of my electronic signature.

Rachel looked at me.

“Did you authorize any of this?”

“No.”

“Did Rowan have access to these materials?”

“Yes.”

We were married.

Of course he did.

But access was not proof.

So we waited.

Vantage began its internal investigation.

Within two days, they found purchase approvals tied to Rowan’s department.

Not all signed by him.

Some by his supervisor.

But Rowan had recommended Hayes Forensic Solutions for “specialized anti-fraud review.”

My fake company had been hired to detect fraud.

I laughed when Rachel told me.

Then cried five minutes later.

Payments flowed from Vantage Medical into Hayes Forensic Solutions.

From there, most went to an account controlled by Mercer Event Concepts.

Selina.

I stared at the tracing report.

“Why?”

Rachel shook her head.

“Let investigators determine intent.”

Good.

Facts.

Not fantasy.

Then Vantage found emails.

Rowan to Selina:

Use Hayes on the next invoice. Compliance won’t question a forensic vendor.

Selina:

What if Phoebe finds out?

Rowan:

She never looks at my work.

Another:

If something ever goes wrong, her name is already on everything.

I stopped reading.

My husband had not merely stolen from his employer.

He had built the escape route through me.

The forensic accountant.

The person a prosecutor might find incredibly convenient to blame.

When confronted through counsel, Rowan denied intending to frame me.

He claimed Hayes Forensic Solutions was originally created because he planned for me to “join later.”

I had never heard of it.

The payments said otherwise.

Then Rachel found the document that removed even that excuse.

An email from Selina:

If Vantage audits, let them think Phoebe handled the consulting. She understands that technical nonsense anyway.

Rowan replied:

Hopefully it never comes to that.

Not:

Absolutely not.

Not:

We are not blaming my wife.

Just:

Hopefully.

I looked at Leo sleeping beside me.

His father had not merely abandoned his birth.

May you like

He had spent eighteen months preparing a financial disaster in my name.
