Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH MIA FINALLY ADMITTED

Six months after the canceled wedding, Mia contacted me again.
This time, her message was different.
Emma, I owe you an apology. A real one.
I stared at it.
Then replied:
You can write it here.
Her response arrived an hour later.
It was long.
She admitted she had known about the money.
She admitted Daniel had told her I would eventually accept the arrangement.
She admitted she had enjoyed being the person Daniel always prioritized.
And she admitted something else.
She had encouraged Daniel to believe I was jealous.
I read that sentence three times.
Then continued.
Mia wrote:
I knew if he thought you disliked me, he'd defend me harder. I told myself it was harmless because I was family. But I was using his loyalty to get what I wanted.
I put the phone down.
For a long time, I stared at the wall.
The apology didn't erase anything.
It didn't return the lost months.
Or the money.
Or the trust.
But it answered a question I'd carried for years.
I hadn't imagined the tension.
I hadn't invented the pattern.
And I hadn't been unreasonable for noticing it.
I replied:
Thank you for acknowledging what happened. I hope you work on building a life where you don't need someone else to choose you at another person's expense. I wish you well, but I don't want further contact.
Then I put the phone away.
That evening, I told Noah.
He listened.
Then asked:
“How do you feel?”
I thought about it.
“Relieved.”
He nodded.
“Anything else?”
I smiled faintly.
“A little sad.”
He reached for my hand.
“Both make sense.”
I looked at him.
“You know what surprises me?”
“What?”
“I thought getting an apology would feel like winning.”
He smiled gently.
“And?”
“It just feels like closing a door.”
Noah squeezed my hand.
“Sometimes that's enough.”
I looked toward the window.
For years, I'd wanted Daniel and Mia to understand my side.
May you like
Now they finally did.
And I discovered I didn't need their understanding to move forward.
