Chapter 9 - JASON FINALLY TOLD ME THE TRUTH

Two years after the incident, Jason asked me to dinner.

Just us.

No children.

No spouses.

“I owe you something.”

“What?”

“The truth.”

I waited.

He stared at the table.

“Dad always told me I was the responsible one.”

I almost laughed.

“You liked that.”

“I loved it.”

At least he admitted it.

“He said I would carry the family.”

“That you were emotional.”

“That girls leave, boys stay.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why didn’t you challenge him?”

“Because the system benefited me.”

There.

The cleanest sentence Jason had ever spoken.

“I didn’t think of it as a system.”

“I thought Dad just understood me better.”

“He paid for Caleb’s school.”

“Trips.”

“Sports.”

“When you complained, I told myself you were jealous.”

He looked at me.

“I needed you to be jealous.”

“Why?”

“Because if you weren’t…”

He swallowed.

“…then I was watching Dad mistreat you and enjoying the benefits.”

I sat quietly.

Then:

“What do you want me to say?”

“Nothing.”

“Good.”

“I’m tired.”

He nodded.

We ate.

Before leaving, Jason handed me an envelope.

Inside was a statement showing he had funded $32,000 into the grandchildren’s trust beyond the cruise reimbursement.

“What is this?”

“Not repayment to you.”

“Good.”

“I know money doesn’t fix it.”

“Then why?”

“Because Caleb received opportunities that came partly from a system Mia was excluded from.”

“I can’t equalize childhood.”

“But I can stop pretending the difference never mattered.”

I closed the envelope.

“Thank you.”

That was the beginning of our relationship as adults.

Not children competing for Dad.
