Chapter 8 - CAMELLIA CAME BACK WITH SOMETHING THAT BELONGED TO ME

Four years passed.

Owen was five.

Luke was still serving his sentence but approaching the later phase of custody under federal rules.

Daniel and I were engaged.

Not rushed.

Not secret.

Rachel made fun of me because the “fake boyfriend” eventually became real.

I told her life lacks imagination.

Then Camellia emailed.

Subject:

I FOUND SOMETHING OF YOURS

Inside was a photograph.

A small wooden box.

Mine.

My grandmother gave it to me before she died.

I lost it during the move after Luke left.

Inside had been:

Letters.

My grandmother’s wedding earrings.

Owen’s hospital bracelet.

The first ultrasound photo.

I called Camellia.

First time in years.

“Where?”

Her voice shook.

“Storage unit.”

Luke had rented one under CMM.

Investigators cleared most property years earlier.

Some personal boxes remained in dispute.

Camellia was finally closing the unit after the entity’s civil matters resolved.

“Why was my box there?”

“I don’t know.”

Then:

“There are other things.”

Documents.

Family photographs.

My old external hard drive.

Luke had removed them from our house before divorce.

Why?

Probably while separating assets and personal papers.

Maybe spite.

Maybe control.

Maybe carelessness.

No hidden conspiracy required.

Camellia shipped everything through our attorneys.

When the wooden box arrived, I opened it at my kitchen table.

Owen’s hospital bracelet sat on top.

I cried.

Daniel said nothing.

Just made tea.

Then I found a letter.

From Luke.

Never sent.

Dated the night before he left.

Clover,

I know you will hate me. You should. I keep telling myself leaving now is cleaner than staying long enough for Owen to know we’re miserable. The truth is uglier. I want the version of my life where I am still impressive to someone. Camellia looks at me the way you did before you knew every weakness I had.

I stopped reading.

Daniel asked:

“Want me to leave?”

“No.”

I continued.

I am also afraid the financial mess at work is going to surface. I have convinced myself I can fix it if I have six more months. I don’t know how to tell you without watching you realize I’m not the man you married.

There.

Luke knew.

Before he left.

The affair had been escape.

So had the financial lies.

Not justification.

Understanding.

Then:

If everything works, you’ll think I was just a cheating bastard. Maybe that is easier than knowing the rest.

I laughed through tears.

He had almost succeeded.

Camellia had been camouflage.

Not innocent.

Not mastermind.

Camouflage.

I kept the letter for Owen.

Not now.

Someday.

With context.

Then I called Camellia again.

“Thank you.”

She was quiet.

“You’re welcome.”

Then:

“Are you happy?”

Unexpected.

“Yes.”

“With Daniel?”

“Yes.”

She laughed softly.

“Luke was so sure he was hired.”

“He technically was.”

“What?”

“His firm.”

She laughed harder.

For the first time, we shared something that was not hatred.

Then she said:

“I’m happy too.”

She was engaged.

To a school counselor.

Ordinary salary.

No Belize.

No secret accounts.

I genuinely wished her well.

That surprised me.

May you like

Healing is rude like that.

It refuses to preserve the enemies you once found useful.
