Chapter 8 - DANIEL FINALLY WATCHED THE VIDEO

For almost two years, Daniel refused to watch the bedroom footage.
He knew what it contained.
He lived it.
But one evening, he asked.
“Can I see it?”
I hesitated.
“Why?”
“My therapist says memory changes when shame gets involved.”
I stared.
“You have a therapist?”
“Try not to sound so shocked.”
“I’m impressed.”
“That’s worse.”
I smiled.
Then opened the archived file.
We sat at the dining table.
I pressed play.
Vanessa entering.
Scissors.
Daniel behind her.
His face.
He looked different from how I remembered.
Not amused.
Nervous.
But then Vanessa cut the first section.
And he stayed.
She cut again.
And he stayed.
I stirred in my sleep.
He did nothing.
Then she said:
Now you learn your place.
And my son answered:
You needed a lesson, Mom.
Daniel stopped the video.
He stood.
Walked to the kitchen sink.
Then vomited.
I followed but did not touch him immediately.
When he finished, he turned.
His face was wet.
“I look like Dad’s brother.”
I froze.
Richard’s older brother had been abusive when they were young.
Richard rarely spoke about it.
Daniel knew enough.
“No.”
I said firmly.
“You look like yourself making a terrible choice.”
“That distinction matters.”
He cried.
“Why?”
“Because if you decide cruelty is simply who you are, then you never have to change.”
He stared at me.
Then:
“Why did you forgive me?”
“I haven’t completely.”
That surprised him.
“I love you.”
“I allow you in my home now.”
“I trust you with some things.”
“But forgiveness isn’t a switch.”
He nodded.
Then asked:
“Will you ever trust me completely again?”
I thought carefully.
“Maybe not.”
That hurt him.
I let it.
“But relationships do not need to return to what they were to become good again.”
He sat down.
May you like
“I’ll take good.”
So would I.
