Chapter 8 - THE MAN WITH THE BIRD TATTOO

Evan survived.

Recovery took time.

He had lost eighteen months.

There was no triumphant way to give those back.

When he finally met Sophia again, he didn't tell her she had saved him.

Adults love placing heroic titles on children because it makes suffering sound purposeful.

Instead he said:

“Thank you for keeping Bunny safe.”

Sophia nodded seriously.

“He doesn't like strangers.”

“I understand.”

Evan looked at me.

We finished the documentary together.

Not the one I'd originally planned.

This one was bigger.

Halcyon had created an illegal intelligence marketplace disguised as cybersecurity protection.

Elisa's network used private information to manipulate contracts and silence threats.

Benjamin handled enforcement.

Marcus discovered pieces of it, panicked and attempted to control the damage secretly rather than expose it.

That decision transformed him from potential whistleblower into participant.

The documentary didn't excuse him.

It didn't turn Elisa into a cartoon.

And it didn't show Sophia's face.

That condition was mine.

Her childhood wasn't public property because adults had failed her.

The film ended with an empty wooden chair.

Nothing underneath it.

Just a chair.

The narration said:

Sometimes evidence isn't hidden because nobody can find it.

May you like

Sometimes everyone important has been trained not to look.
