Chapter 9 - The Retribution of the Unfaithful

Agent Marcus Vance turned his cold, professional gaze toward Christopher Miller.
“Christopher Miller, Brenda Thorne,” Agent Vance declared, pulling a secondary set of warrants from his folder. “Pursuant to Title 18 of the United States Code, you are under arrest for Interstate Commercial Espionage, Conspiracy to Defraud a Publicly Traded Enterprise, and Receipt of Stolen Trade Secrets.”
Two federal marshals closed in on Christopher.
Christopher began hyperventilating, tearing at his silk tie with shaking fingers. “No! Wait! Officer, listen to me! I am an executive at ApexBio Solutions! I was only negotiating a commercial licensing contract! I didn't know anything about the poison! Douglas approached me!”
“You negotiated a thirteen-million-dollar illicit offshore wire to a Swiss escrow account, Mr. Miller,” Agent Vance replied with icy clinical detachment. “Your encrypted WhatsApp logs and your private offshore accounts in Grand Cayman were seized by our cyber division two hours ago. ApexBio Solutions has already terminated your employment with cause and filed an emergency civil fraud suit against your personal assets.”
Click. Snap.
The cold steel cuffs locked around Christopher’s wrists with a sharp, resonant crack.
Beside him, Brenda Thorne broke down into frantic, breathless tears as another officer cuffed her, her diamond bracelet clinking against the iron restraints.
In the public gallery, Florence Miller lost her mind completely. She rushed past the railing, waving her alligator purse at the agents, screaming shrilly: “Leave my son alone! Christopher is a genius! He earns half a million dollars a year! You can’t arrest an executive! Rebecca, tell them! Tell them Christopher is your husband!”
I stepped forward, stopping three paces from my former mother-in-law.
Florence looked at me with wild, desperate eyes, reaching out to grasp the lapel of my sapphire silk jacket. “Rebecca! Honey! Please! Tell these men there’s been a mistake! We are family! I took you into my home! You owe Christopher your loyalty!”
I gently, firmly removed her claw-like fingers from my jacket.
I looked directly into the eyes of the woman who, three weeks earlier, had told me to ask myself what I had stopped doing as a wife while her son slept with another woman.
“When I left your house three weeks ago, Florence,” I said, my voice calm, level, and ringing with absolute, majestic clarity across the silent boardroom, “you smiled and told me that when I was alone, I would understand how expensive it is to survive.”
I stepped aside, gesturing to the four federal officers holding her son in chains.
“Now,” I added softly, “you and your son are about to find out how expensive it is to steal.”
Christopher looked at me through his tears, his arrogant corporate swagger completely incinerated into pathetic, sniveling ruin.
“Rebecca...” Christopher wept, his knees trembling beneath his tailored slacks. “Forgive me... please... I made a mistake... I love you, Rebecca...”
I looked at the man I had spent twelve years loving, serving, and protecting.
I felt no hatred. I felt no lingering heartbreak. I felt only the profound, clean, unshakeable freedom of a woman who had walked through the fire and left the ashes behind.
“My name is Director Rebecca Miller,” I said clearly. “And my business with you is concluded.”
The marshals hauled Christopher and Brenda out the double doors, their pathetic cries fading down the executive elevator bank into the holding cells below.
The entire boardroom erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation.
Director Arthur Montgomery stood at the head of the table, raising his glass of water high into the morning light.
“To Garrett Corbin—the undisputed President of Corbin BioTech! And to Rebecca Miller—the woman who stood as the shield of justice!”
