Chapter 15 - The Mural of Three Lights

Z

The new year brought changes that no one at the estate had expected.

Gideon stepped away from the family's illicit operations and cooperated fully with investigators. The legitimate shipping business survived under new leadership, though it was smaller and far less glamorous than the empire he had once controlled.

Some people called him weak.

Others called him foolish.

Gideon stopped reading the comments.

He had more important things to do.

He attended Noah's therapy sessions, learned how to make breakfast without burning the toast, and began volunteering at a community center that supported children recovering from trauma.

Marin's studio flourished.

Her mural at the library attracted attention, and a local school commissioned her to paint a hallway. She hired two assistants and began teaching free weekend art classes for children whose families couldn't afford lessons.

Noah became her most enthusiastic student.

He painted a lighthouse with three beams of light: one yellow, one blue, and one red.

“What do they mean?” Marin asked.

He pointed to the yellow beam.

“Mom.”

Then the blue.

“Dad.”

Finally, he pointed to the red.

“You.”

Marin swallowed.

“And what do the lights do?”

Noah thought about it.

“Help boats come home.”

She hugged him.

When Gideon arrived, Noah proudly explained the painting. Gideon stood very still as he listened to his son speak about his mother without fear.

For two years, he had believed grief meant keeping the past untouched.

Now he understood that remembering Elena did not mean preventing Noah from loving someone else.

That evening, he and Marin walked along the harbor.

“I used to think I could solve every problem by making it disappear,” he admitted.

“And now?”

“Now I understand some things need to be faced. Some need to be forgiven. And some need to be painted a different color.”

She laughed.

“That last part sounds suspiciously like my philosophy.”

“I've been studying.”

He took her hand.

Marin rested her head against his shoulder.

They were not perfect. Gideon still sometimes mistook worry for a reason to take control. Marin still struggled to ask for help before exhaustion forced her to stop.

But they talked.

They apologized.

They tried again.

And when Noah called from the house, his voice carried across the garden.

“Dad! Marin! Come see!”

May you like

They ran toward him together.

Behind them, the harbor lights shone against the dark water.
