Chapter 14 - THE SCHOOL LUCIA DREAMED OF

The Lucia Moretti School of Music opened eighteen months later.
Not in a marble palace.
Not behind iron gates.
In a renovated brick building near the original Bellwether site.
The school offered free and reduced-cost music instruction to children who otherwise couldn't afford it.
Clare helped design the curriculum.
Sophie Miller, now preparing for college, volunteered as a mentor.
Isabella attended the opening ceremony.
Owen helped with the building's technical systems.
And Vincent worked with independent trustees to ensure the school would never depend on one powerful family's unchecked control.
On opening day, Clare stood in the main rehearsal room.
Sunlight poured through tall windows.
Children carried instrument cases.
Teachers arranged music stands.
The air was filled with tuning notes.
Clare closed her eyes.
For a moment, she heard her mother's voice.
Don't lock your shoulder, sweetheart.
She smiled.
Then opened her eyes.
Vincent stood beside her.
“What are you thinking?”
Clare looked around.
“That my mother would've loved this.”
He nodded.
“And my grandmother.”
She smiled.
“Yes.”
The school included a small memorial gallery.
Photographs of the original Bellwether Conservatory.
Stories of its teachers and students.
Documents explaining the financial scandal and the long effort to uncover the truth.
Clare insisted the history remain visible.
Not to shame future generations.
But to ensure the institution never forgot what happened when power went unquestioned.
That afternoon, a little girl approached Clare.
She was eight.
Her name was Lily.
She held a violin case almost as big as her torso.
“Ms. Bennett?”
Clare smiled.
“Yes?”
“Is it true you used to play at Carnegie Hall?”
Clare laughed softly.
“Yes.”
Lily's eyes widened.
“Wow.”
Then she looked down.
“My mom says I might be good someday.”
Clare crouched beside her.
“You already have something important.”
Lily frowned.
“What?”
“The courage to begin.”
The little girl smiled.
Clare opened the case and helped her position the violin.
“Ready?”
Lily nodded.
Clare smiled.
“Then let's make some music.”
From the doorway, Vincent watched.
He remembered the gala.
The laughter.
His cruel promise.
The way Clare had lifted Lucia's violin and changed everything.
He looked around the school.
Children learning.
Teachers smiling.
Music filling the halls.
May you like
Then he whispered:
“Thank you, Nonna.”
