Chapter 6 - VANESSA’S VERSION

Vanessa contacted me again.
I almost ignored her.
Then she wrote:
There are messages you should have before Daniel deletes them.
We met with Rachel present.
Vanessa had downloaded her conversations with Daniel.
Eight months.
Not four.
My stomach dropped.
“You said September.”
“That’s when it became physical.”
“When did it start?”
“May.”
Emotional affair.
Coffee.
Texts.
Lunches.
Complaints about his marriage.
Daniel had been building his victim story for months.
One message:
Emily barely notices me anymore.
Sent the same day I had surprised him with concert tickets.
Another:
We sleep separately most nights.
False.
Another:
She only cares about work.
Sent during the week I took vacation because Daniel had the flu.
I stopped reading.
Rachel asked:
“Do you need a break?”
“No.”
I kept going.
Then something strange appeared.
Vanessa had pushed back repeatedly.
Have you told Emily you’re unhappy?
Daniel:
She doesn’t listen.
Vanessa:
Then separate before this becomes something else.
Daniel:
It’s complicated financially.
Later:
Emily controls most of our money.
I laughed aloud.
Daniel paid bills.
He had more financial access than I did.
The lie served two purposes.
It excused his staying.
And made Vanessa believe I was the obstacle.
Vanessa looked at me.
“I should have verified things.”
“Yes.”
“I didn’t want to.”
Also honest.
“Why are you helping now?”
She looked down.
“Because he did the same thing to me.”
“What?”
“He told me the townhouse lease was in both our names.”
“It isn’t?”
“Only mine.”
That meant liability.
“He told me the business loan would be his.”
“It was going to be home equity.”
“Yes.”
Tears filled her eyes.
“He was setting me up too.”
I understood.
If the relationship worked, Daniel became the generous provider.
If it failed, Vanessa held the lease and business obligations.
He protected himself from everyone.
Rachel asked:
“Anything else?”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then showed us one final thread.
Daniel and a financial planner named Kevin Morse.
Daniel:
Need to know what happens if Emily contests the HELOC after funding.
Kevin:
Depends on signature authorization.
Daniel:
She won’t. She hates public conflict.
My chest went cold.
Again.
My personality used as a financial assumption.
Rachel photographed everything.
“You may be subpoenaed.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I understand.”
Before leaving, she stopped beside me.
“I am sorry.”
I believed her.
But forgiveness was not owed on demand.
“I hope you make different choices next time.”
She cried quietly.
“So do I.”
We never became friends.
That would have felt false.
But we stopped being enemies.
May you like
Daniel was enough of a problem without women fighting each other over who he had lied to more.
