Chapter 8 - DANIEL’S THREE STORIES

During divorce discovery, I learned Daniel had been telling three versions of our marriage.
To me:
We were tired but basically fine.
To Vanessa:
We had been emotionally separated for more than a year.
To his parents:
I had become controlling and obsessed with work, but he was “trying to save things.”
All three stories served one purpose.
Daniel remained the reasonable man trapped between difficult women.
Vanessa eventually saw it too.
She called me once.
Only once.
“I ended it.”
I was quiet.
“Why are you telling me?”
“Because he lied to me.”
“You already knew he lied to me.”
That stopped her.
“Yes.”
“Did it only become unacceptable when you became the person being lied to?”
Silence.
Then:
“Yes.”
That was probably the most honest thing Vanessa ever said to me.
She continued:
“He told me the townhouse money was guaranteed.”
“It wasn’t.”
“He told me Robert was retiring and Daniel would take over the company next year.”
That was also untrue.
Robert had considered stepping back eventually.
Nothing decided.
“He said Margaret approved of us.”
False.
“He said you refused counseling.”
He had never asked.
Vanessa exhaled.
“I’m sorry.”
I believed she meant it.
That did not mean I wanted her friendship.
“I hope Eli is okay.”
Her voice broke.
“Daniel was important to him.”
That hurt unexpectedly.
Children pay for adult lies without understanding the invoice.
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
Then she said:
“You were right.”
“About what?”
“I knew you existed.”
She swallowed.
“And I made that acceptable because I wanted him.”
No excuses.
I respected that.

Then we ended the call.
I never spoke to Vanessa personally again.
