Chapter 6 - THE FALL OF VINCENT MARLOWE

Vincent lost almost everything.

Not overnight.

Real consequences are slower.

Accounts were frozen.

Contracts collapsed.

Properties were seized.

Former allies disappeared.

Investigators dismantled illegal operations.

Vincent cooperated.

Not because cooperation guaranteed freedom.

It didn't.

He admitted what he had done.

Money laundering.

Illegal gambling.

Bribery he authorized years earlier.

Obstruction.

He refused to blame Gabriel for crimes Gabriel hadn't committed.

That mattered to me.

Vincent eventually received a negotiated sentence involving confinement, restitution, asset forfeiture, and years of supervision.

Before he surrendered, he called me into his office.

Almost everything had been removed.

“You're free.”

I laughed.

“I was always free.”

He smiled faintly.

“Good correction.”

He handed me a folder.

Inside was control of three legitimate Marlowe companies.

I pushed it back.

“No.”

“You ran them.”

“For you.”

“No. You ran them despite me.”

“I don't want charity.”

His smile deepened.

“I knew you'd say that.”

The documents weren't a gift.

They were an offer from a newly independent board to make me chief operating officer.

Authority.

Not charity.

Even now.

My eyes filled.

“You remembered.”

“I remember everything about you.”

The room changed.

For months we had avoided it.

Now there was nothing left to hide behind.

“I love you,” I said.

Vincent closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“That is a terrible response.”

He laughed softly.

Then looked at me.

“I love you too.”

My heart broke and healed in the same second.

He did not kiss me.

“Why not?”

“Because tomorrow I surrender.”

“So?”

“So I will not begin our life by asking you to wait for me.”

“You're not asking.”

“Claire.”

“My choices belong to me.”

“Yes.”

“And yours belong to you.”

“Yes.”

“So make yours.”

Vincent looked at me for a long time.

Then he kissed me.

Not like a mafia boss.

Not like my employer.

Like a man terrified of losing something he had never allowed himself to ask for.

When we separated, I whispered:

“I'll decide whether I wait.”

He smiled.

May you like

“That sounds like you.”
