Chapter 7 - THE TRUST MONEY

Holly learned about the trust at sixteen.

Not seven.

Nine years passed.

Gene remained in our lives, but differently.

She never again controlled Christmas.

Never again distributed gifts like rank.

Family holidays rotated houses.

Sometimes Gene came.

Sometimes she didn’t.

She and Holly slowly built something new.

Not the grandmother-granddaughter relationship Gene believed she had been owed.

The one she actually earned.

Then, at sixteen, Holly received a formal trust notice.

She brought it to me.

“Why do I have money?”

I laughed.

“Excellent question.”

Brandon explained.

His grandfather created an education and support trust for descendants.

Because Holly was his legally adopted daughter, she qualified.

She stared at us.

“Is this why Grandma hated the adoption?”

“No.”

Brandon answered immediately.

“Her problem started before the trust mattered.”

“But it made it worse?”

“Yes.”

Holly became quiet.

Then:

“How much?”

Enough to help with college.

Not enough to make her rich.

Brandon had never touched it.

Neither had I.

Holly looked angry.

“She thought I stole something from the cousins.”

“Maybe.”

“Did I?”

“No.”

“Would they get less?”

A little, technically.

The trust pool divided among eligible descendants.

That bothered Holly.

“I don’t want Grandma thinking I took their money.”

Brandon said:

“You do not organize your identity around someone else’s unfair accusation.”

Holly looked at him.

“That sounds rehearsed.”

“I’ve had nine years.”

She laughed.

Then she did something Gene never expected.

Holly chose to use only what she needed for education.

Later, when she became eligible for a discretionary distribution, she donated part of it to a scholarship fund for children in blended and adoptive families.

Gene cried when she learned.

Holly rolled her eyes.

“Grandma cries a lot now.”

I smiled.

“She spent years holding it in until it could control rooms.”

Holly thought.

“That’s depressing.”

Accurate.
